German High Court Declares All Software Patentable
Long gone are the times when Europe was that bastion of resistance against software patents and patents on such things as file systems were ruled invalid. In a decision published today, the Federal Court of Justice of Germany upheld a patent on the automatic generation of structured documents (such as XML/HTML) in a client-server setting.

13 Open Source Hardware Companies Making $1 Million or More (video)
Selling products whose design anyone can access, edit, or use on their own is pretty crazy. It’s also good business. At the annual hacker conference Foo Camp East this year, Phillip Torrone and Limor Fried from Adafruit Industries gave a rapid fire five minute presentation on thirteen companies with million dollar revenues from open source hardware (OSHW). Companies providing OSHW allow all designs of the products to be shared through an open license, meaning that everyone is free to download, modify, and share all the schematics and associated software. You’re encouraged to make, refine, or even sell your own versions of these products. While this business model is counter-intuitive for those used to our patent and copyright loving system, Torrone and Fried estimate that the industry will reach a billion dollars by 2015. Check out their talk in the video below.

US prosecution of McKinnon 'spiteful', says ex-top cop
The senior former policeman in charge of the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit squad which first arrested Gary McKinnon has described the ongoing US prosecution of the Pentagon hacker as "spiteful".
Marc Kirby, retired former detective inspector at the NHTCU, was in charge of the team which first arrested McKinnon for cybercrime offences in 2002. US attempts to extradite McKinnon only started three years later in 2005, after the signature of a controversial extradition treaty between the US and UK.

PDF security hole opens can of worms
The security perils of PDF files have been further highlighted by new research illustrating how a manipulated file might be used to infect other PDF files on a system.
Jeremy Conway, an application security researcher at NitroSecurity, said the attack scenario he has discovered shows PDFs are "wormable". Computer viruses are capable, by definition, of overwriting other files to spread. Conway's research is chiefly notable for illustrating how a benign PDF file might become infected using features supported by PDF specification, not a software vulnerability as such, and without the use of external binaries or JavaScript.

Video: Hackers Have Already Jailbroken the iPad
The iPad has only been on sale for less than three days, and already hackers have jailbroken it to get around Apple’s restrictions.
MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev Team committed to hacking the iPhone OS, has jailbroken the iPad after just a day of tinkering. The hack gave him root access to the iPad and allowed him to install non-approved applications and to run apps simultaneously. It uses the same exploit employed to jailbreak the current OS 3.1.3 iPhone.

WPA-PSK Cracking As a Service
Moxie Marlinspike, a security researcher well known for his SSL/TLS attacks, today launched a cloud-based WPA cracking service, where for $34 you can test the security of your WPA password. The WPA Cracker Web site states: 'WPA-PSK networks are vulnerable to dictionary attacks, but running a respectable-sized dictionary over a WPA network handshake can take days or weeks. WPA Cracker gives you access to a 400CPU cluster that will run your network capture against a 135 million word dictionary created specifically for WPA passwords. While this job would take over 5 days on a contemporary dual-core PC, on our cluster it takes an average of 20 minutes.

Look through the AR window
“Augmented Reality is your window to the world,” suggest some companies who have released applications for the iPhone 3G S and Android handsets over the past few months. As we have witnessed since the launch of Layar in June, the world needed another “window.” Or, perhaps we needed another browser? Have you heard about the World Surfer by GeoVector?
