AV Firms Split Over Defcon Contest
Security firms have split over the merits of a hacking contest aimed against anti-virus packages planned for August's Defcon conference.
Anti-virus firm Sophos reckons the exercise will serve only to increase the volume of malware in circulation, further taxing the resources of already hard-pressed security firms. However, net security services firm MessageLabs reckons the proposed Race to Zero competition has some merits as an exercise. It compared the wheeze to penetration testing against corporate networks.

Linux guru Hans Reiser convicted of first-degree murder
A jury has convicted Hans Reiser, developer of the ReiserFS filesystem for Linux, of first degree murder for killing his estranged wife in 2006 even though her body was never found.
As the verdict was read in Alameda County Superior Court, Reiser furrowed his brows. Dressed in the same dark coat he's worn for months, the 44-year old defendant asked if he could speak with his attorney and he was escorted from the courtroom by a bailiff.

PowerBooks can transform into Desktops?
When one Mac modder found himself in possession of a well-worn PowerBook that was having some screen problems, he decided to breathe new life into it by turning it into a Mac desktop. (MacTop?)
Essentially, the case is made of two sheets of white acrylic, bolted together by socket countersunk screws. I’ve used 15mm chrome pipe as the four spacers between the acrylic sheet. The perforated steel was cut to my specifications by a very helpful chap found on eBay. Cutting the CD drive slot was a little tricky, as was drilling the power button hole, but once done they seem to function ok.

Database Trojan infests pro-Tibet websites
Security researchers have unearthed more details about a Trojan that targets backend databases as well as desktop clients.
The Fribet Trojan has been planted on pro-Tibet websites, possibly using a Vector Markup Language flaw (MS07-004) patched by Microsoft early last year. When visitors to the pro-Tibet websites are infected, the Fribet Trojan creates a backdoor on compromised hosts.

Hackers exploit poor website code
Web designers making very old mistakes are letting malicious hackers hijack visitors to their sites, say experts.
Many of the loopholes left in the code created for websites have been known about for almost a decade say the security researchers.
The poor practices are proving very attractive to hi-tech criminals looking for a ready source of victims.
According to Symantec the number of sites vulnerable in this way almost doubled during the last half of 2007.

Super Mario in 14kB Javascript
Here's an experiment in keeping things small and confined to one Javascript file. There are no external image files or anything, everything is rendered with Javascript using either canvas elements or old fashioned div-making tactics (for IE). The sprites are stored in custom encoded strings in a format that only allows 4 colors for each sprite but in turn only takes up around 40-60 bytes per sprite.
