NEC brennt formatunabhängig
Der japanische Elektronikkonzern NEC hat einen formatunabhängigen DVD-Brenner angekündigt. Beim ND-1100A soll sich den Benutzer beim Brennen von DVDs nicht mehr auf eines der beiden wiederbeschreibbaren Formate DVD-R(W) oder DVD+R(W) festlegen müssen, sondern kann frei zwischen den beiden wählen, gibt NEC heute, Dienstag, in einer Presseaussendung bekannt. Die Aufzeichnung von einer Stunde DVD-Video nimmt 15 Minuten in Anspruch.

Though still in the realm of theory, the killer worms described in a research paper entitled, "How to Own the Internet in Your Spare Time", are triggering some skepticism but the idea of them is seldom dismissed as outlandish science fiction.

Microsoft unleashes Office 11 on beta testers
MICROSOFT WILL DELIVER to selected beta testers on Tuesday an early version of its long-awaited Office 11 desktop suite that will feature versions of Word, Excel, and Access that fully support XML.
To be made available to only a "few thousand" testers, Microsoft officials will be heavily emphasizing the new suite's ability to better connect people with each other in order to better collaborate and share data more seamlessly, but also to connect business processes both inside and outside the firewall.

The software giant said that the server handles the details of Microsoft's BetaPlace, where thousands of people participate as beta testers of new software.

Tsunami, the IU-developed file transfer protocol, helps break records for high-speed data transfer
Using a network file transfer protocol developed by researchers at Indiana University's Advanced Network Management Lab, physicists at TRIUMF, Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, were able to transfer 4.7 gigabits of data between their laboratories in Vancouver, British Columbia, and CERN, the European organization for nuclear research in Geneva, Switzerland, in less than 60 seconds.
The data was transfered at speeds reaching 769 megabits per second. This is the equivalent of transferring a full compact disc in less than eight seconds or a full-length DVD movie in less than one minute.

Erste kabellose Webcam überträgt per Funk
Logitech hat offiziell seine erste kabellose Webcam vorgestellt. Die QuickCam Cordless erlaubt es dem Benutzer seine Bilder auf eine Distanz von bis zu 25 Metern per Funk an seinen PC zu übertragen. Dabei können mehrere Kameras an eine Sende/Empfänger übertragen und vom Benutzer-PC aus gesteuert werden. Die Übertragung der Bilddaten erfolgt im 2,4 GHz-Band.
