Keiner kann so schön Elektroartikel unters Volk bringen wie Apple-Chef Steve Jobs. Denn der Zeremonienmeister des Macintosh besitzt eine seltene Gabe: Er kann den Verkäufer spielen, ohne dabei wie einer auszusehen.
Bevor er spricht, hat zunächst ein Toter das Wort. Im gespenstisch abgedunkelten, nur von drei überdimensionalen weißen Apple-Logos beleuchteten Auditorium des Palais de Congrès erklingt als Aufwärmer der kürzlich verblichene Country-Altmeister Johnny Cash mit "In My Life I Love You Most" aus den Boxen.

FBI indentifiziert "Blaster"-Autor
Rund zwei Wochen nachdem sein Wurm "Blaster" vor allem Microsoft in Atem hielt, wurde der Autor des PC-Virus identifiziert. Noch heute sollen die Handschellen klicken.

Linux erobert die deutschen Amtsstuben
München, Deutschland-Sitz des amerikanischen Software-Hauses, steht vor einer Richtungswahl: Bleibt die Stadt Microsoft treu bei Betriebssystem und Büroanwendungsprogrammen - oder wechselt sie doch lieber zur freien Software Linux? Für die Stadt geht es um 16 000 Rechner und einige Server, für Microsoft um weitaus mehr: "Wenn die größte deutsche Kommune auf Linux umsteigt, ist das ein Signal", sagt Wolowicz. Bis Ende April muß Microsoft ein Angebot abgeben; am 28. Mai entscheidet der Stadtrat.

Xbox Hacked - without a mod chip
Following on from the news that it's possible to run unsigned applications on the Xbox by using a loophole in EA's Agent Under Fire, crackers have discovered how to mod the system without a physical modchip.
The new system breaks open the Xbox for running third-party applications (including the Linux operating system) or pirated games just as effectively as standard mod chips, but the only physical alteration needed to the box is a very minor soldering task to link up two jumper points on the system board.

A large part of my workday is spent surfing the Web, looking for Sites of the Nite that might titillate you callused TSS fans. If the HR department objects to the nature of some of my more "adventurous" surfing, I can say it's for research purposes only, and they have to back off.
You probably don't have these luxuries. For many of you, even going to a site as innocuous as CNN.com at work might get you a reprimand. You should be working, after all, not learning. That's where Ghostzilla comes in.

Mom kills lazy son after he refused to get off the computer
A woman stabbed her son to death in a dispute over his refusal to get off the computer and make his bed, police said on Tuesday.
Yelena Avramenko, 49, later admitted to killing her son, Denis, 26, and re-enacted the crime in front of investigators, police said.

Ballmer feilscht: Windows statt Linux für München?
Die bayerische Landeshauptstadt erwägt seit längerem einen Komplett-Umstieg von Windows auf Linux. Das macht Microsoft nervös: Steve Ballmer kam jetzt höchstpersönlich nach München, um dort mit OB Christian Ude zu verhandeln.
Das berichtet heute die Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ). Aus Angst vor der Signalwirkung eines Münchner Linux-Umstiegs auf andere Kommunen habe Ballmer extra seinen Ski-Urlaub unterbrochen, um den Münchner Oberbürgermeister persönlich eines Besseren zu überzeugen.

Such was the case with Conrado Salas Cano, a PSU graduate student in physics and environmental science. Unknown to him his Web site was carrying al-Qaida's claim of responsibility for the Sept. 11 attacks, the suicide-bombing of the USS Cole, the 1998 bombings of two US Embassies in Africa and page after page of terrorist propaganda in Arabic.
