Sony details new handheld, iPod rival
Sony on Tuesday detailed plans for a much-anticipated, all-in-one handheld gaming device that includes a digital music and video player and could even act as mobile telephone.
Officials of the world's largest consumer electronics maker also said Sony would launch a rival to Apple Computer's iPod digital music player next year for as little as $60.

Red Hat pulls plugs on Red Hat Linux product line
Red Hat yesterday unveiled its answer to the vexed question of what it should do about its consumer line - dump it. This is not quite how CEO Matthew Szulik put it to The Register over lunch yesterday, nor indeed did he say flat out 'oh, by the way, we're shooting the Red Hat Linux distribution when North Carolina wakes up, bye now,' but that is indeed what the company did.

Japan team claims Net speed record
A research team from Japan claims to have achieved the world record speed in data transmission using Internet protocols.
The team, comprising scientists from Keio University and divisions of Japan's largest telcoms firm NTT, achieved a speed of 43 gigabits per second over an optical network between two campuses of Keio several kilometers apart.

Full-featured PC fits in pocket
A full-featured PC that is small enough to slip into a shirt pocket is being hailed by its makers as the world's first modular computer. The machine can perform as both a PC and a handheld computer, but it remains to be seen if consumers are willing to pay for such a hybrid device.

The Panther Roars (in Pain)
How do you waste an unseasonably warm and beautiful weekend in San Francisco in late October?
The answer is: by attempting to install Apple's newest version of OS X, better known as Panther, on Friday night without first backing up the machine.
Then, when it all goes horribly wrong, spending the better part of the next 48 hours in a musty, airless office trying to save irreplaceable files while sane, well-adjusted people are out enjoying the sun.

People are so fed up with spam, porn and viruses that they are put off high-speed broadband, says a study.
The telecoms industry could do more to help users avoid the "dark side" of the net and pitfalls, says the study by think tank the Work Foundation.

Microsoft Puts DRM into Office
This "Information Rights Management" scheme in the latest Microsoft Office will have some value for paranoid corporate types. For the rest of us it's an absolute disaster, and we should resist.
This is digital restrictions management (DRM), and Microsoft is using it to accomplish two goals. The first is to continue down the path it has followed so ardently in recent years, taking away customers' control of what they've purchased and keeping it in the hands of the companies selling it.
