Will Microsoft Wallop Friendster?
Rumors about Microsoft's Wallop have been greatly exaggerated, mostly due to the blogging community's inability to penetrate the site's invitation-only front door.
Speculation about Wallop began immediately following the company's low-key announcement at last month's Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles that it was working on a tool that incorporates blogging and social-networking capabilities. Some observers surmised it was a blogging tool for the 2006 launch of Microsoft's Longhorn operating system. Others suggested it was knowledge-management software, à la Lotus Notes, slated for the second quarter of 2004.

Microsoft forgets to renew hotmail.co.uk domain
Microsoft was busy covering up an almighty cock-up last night after forgetting to renew its hotmail.co.uk domain name.
Despite being warned that the domain for its popular Web mail service was up for renewal, it seems Microsoft - or whoever had the task of managing its hotmail.co.uk domain - overlooked this vital piece of administration.

Neue Longhorn-Grafikfunktionen werden Flash-Killer genannt
Microsofts neues Grafik- und Animations-Toolset mit dem Codenamen "Sparkle" soll in Microsofts .Net-Runtime-Umgebung integriert werden. Mit diesen Worten zitiert der Service internetnews.com Software-Entwickler, die mit Microsofts Programmier-Abteilung in Verbindung stehen. Die neuen Tools würden im Endeffekt den Tod für Flash- und Director-Animationen bedeuten, wenn Longhorn sich im Markt durchsetzt.

Hintertür in den falschen Linux-Kernel eingebaut
Ein Versuch, eine Hintertür in den Linux-Kernel einzuschleusen, ist gescheitert. Zwar gelang es einem Unbekannten, im CVS-Baum des Kernels in die Datei kernel/exit.c zwei Zeilen Code einzufügen. Dieser ist jedoch nur ein Export der Master-Kernel-Quellen -- diese werden nicht im CVS, sondern mit der Versionsverwaltung Bitkeeper gepflegt.

Microsoft to offer $250,000 bounty on MSBlast worm and SoBig virus authors
Microsoft is offering two $250,000 rewards for information leading to the arrest of the individuals responsible for both the MSBlast worm and SoBig virus. The reward is being announced in conjunction with the FBI, but the money is apparently coming completely from Microsoft. Some analysts claim that this is the first time a technology company has posted such a public reward for information for relating to such hackers. Of course, there's a first time for everything, and to date law enforcement has had very limited success tracking down these folks. Perhaps money will get to the bottom of this.

A rising tide of junk email is spawning a highly lucrative "antispam" industry as everyone tries to sell something on the Internet.
About half of all email is unsolicited junk mail or "spam," clogging up inboxes, and costing businesses billions of dollars in lost productivity.

Microsoft setzt Kopfgeld auf Wurm-Autoren aus
250.000 US-Dollar soll es Microsoft wert sein, wenn jemand Informationen liefert, die zur Verhaftung der Autoren der Würmer W32.Blaster und Sobig führen. Das berichtet der US-Newsdienst CNet unter Berufung auf nicht weiter genannte Quellen. Microsoft hat für den heutigen Mittwoch um 16 Uhr (deutscher Zeit) eine gemeinsame Pressekonferenz mit dem FBI, dem Secret Service und Interpol angesetzt, auf der die Initiative des Software-Konzerns wohl bekannt gegeben werden soll.
