COMDEX: 50,000 attendees expected
Quality over quantity is this year's COMDEX catch phrase. The technology show is only expecting about 50,000 attendees, compared with the 125,000 registered attendees reported by its organizer last year, but COMDEX 2003 will not be the convention of old when it opens today.

Al-Jazeera hacker sentenced
A Los Angeles-area man has been fined and sentenced to community service for hacking into the Web site of satellite TV network Al-Jazeera during the U.S.-led war in Iraq and rerouting visitors to a page featuring an American flag and the motto "let freedom ring.''
At a sentencing hearing Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Howard Matz told Web designer John William Racine II: "I don't think of you as an evil person...but this was a crime. It wasn't just a childish prank."

Generate a CSS layout for your site
The CSS layouts are based on an excellent 3 column CSS layout designed by Douglas Livingstone. The generator will create a CSS layout that has fixed width left and/or right columns with a dynamic width center column, all the same height with header and footer.

Linux soll auf dem Desktop "erblühen"
Nachdem das freie Betriebsystem Linux auf Servern bereits großflächig Einzug gehalten hat, soll Linux nun auch auf dem Desktop verstärkt zum Einsatz kommen.
Bei der "Desktop Linux Conference" Anfang der Woche legten dazu etliche Hersteller ihre Pläne dar.

Microsoft Releases Fix for Security Flaws
Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O on Tuesday released its latest batch of security updates to fix four new holes in its software, including three that are rated "critical."
All of the holes could allow an attacker to run malicious code on a user's computer, the Redmond, Washington company said.
The critical holes affect the Internet Explorer Web browser and Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The two Windows holes do not affect Windows Server 2003. The IE hole is rated "moderate" for Windows Server 2003.

Patch-Day bei Microsoft
Wie von Microsoft angekündigt, erscheinen Patches nur noch an jedem zweiten Mittwoch eines Monats. Heute ist es soweit: Patch-Day. Insgesamt vier Security Bulletins beschreiben Fehler im Internet Information Server, Word und Excel, Internet Explorer und Windows 2000/XP und liefern Bugfix-Pakete dafür. Anwender können die Updates einzeln über Links in den Bulletins bekommen oder automatisch über die Windows-Update-Funktion einspielen.

Punkt 19 Uhr ging es los: Schach-Großmeister Garry Kasparow trifft in seinem dritten Computerschach-Turnier auf X3D Fritz. Nach einer Niederlage und einem Remis will es Kasparow diesmal wissen - SPIEGEL ONLINE überträgt das Spiel live.

Schnelles Ende im neuen Kimble-Prozess
Manches Mal sind auch Legenden eher kleinlaut: Die selbst ernannte Computer-Legende, der Anti-Terror-Kämpfer und Lebemann Kim Schmitz, bekannte sich in einem Verfahren wegen Veruntreuung für schuldig. Kimble -- wie sein unfreiwilliger Namensvetter auch schon einmal spektakulär auf der Flucht -- wurde zu zwei Jahren Haft auf Bewährung verurteilt.

Datenschützer befürchten Überwachung durch neues Maut-System
Weil das neue Maut-System die 'totale Verkehrsüberwachung' ermöglicht, empfehlen Datenschützer der Bundesregierung den Vertrag mit Toll Collect zu kündigen. Die Firma weißt die Vorwürfe jedoch zurück.

Wettrüsten in der digitalen Lebenswelt
Der erste Computervirus wurde vor 20 Jahren von Fred Cohen vorgestellt, mittlerweile sind sie dank ihres "Erfolges" als Parasiten kaum mehr wegzudenken.
