Wieder kritischer Fehler im Internet-Explorer
Durch eine Sicherheitslücke im Internet Explorer von Microsoft ist es möglich, sich über Webseiten ungewünschte Programme einzuhandeln. Durch einen Fehler im ActiveScripting können nicht sichere Programme aus dem Internet heruntergeladen und auf dem Wirtsrechner ausgeführt werden, ohne dass der Nutzer es bemerkt. Eine Lösung gibt es bisher noch nicht.

Update für die "Informationsgesellschaft" verzweifelt gesucht
Die Debatte um die "Informationsgesellschaft" ist an sich selbst erstickt und bedarf dringend eines Neustarts. Das ist die Grundthese eines zweitägigen Symposiums, das die Alcatel-SEL-Stiftung noch bis zum Donnerstagnachmittag in Berlin veranstaltet. Das gut 30 Jahre alte Konzept der "Informationsgesellschaft" sei "nach dem Platzen der Internetblase" selbst dem Platzen nahe, erklärte der Bremer Informatikprofessor Herbert Kubicek auf der Konferenz.

At least that's what Weta Digital, the visual effects house behind The Lord of the Rings trilogy, wants you to believe. Its mantra for the final installment: photorealism. The Return of the King, which opens in theaters December 17, will feature almost 50 percent more f/x shots than The Two Towers and will be composed of more data than the first two movies combined.

Microsoft massive Monopolanstrengungen
Statt wie bisher nur nach Dateinamen suchen zu können, sollen dem Nutzer damit Möglichkeiten an die Hand gegeben werden, auch Texte und andere Bürodokumente bequem vom Desktop-Screen aus nach Stichwörtern durchsuchen zu können.
Diese Suchfunktionen werden dann laut Microsoft direkt ins Betriebssystem integriert, so wie bisher schon...

Nachi-Wurm infizierte US-Geldautomaten
Nach einem Bericht des Sicherheitsmagazins SecurityFocus sind im August Geldautomaten zweier US-Banken mit dem Nachi-Wurm infiziert worden. Die Geldautomaten (ATM, Automatic Teller Machines) wurden von der Firma Diebold hergestellt und laufen mit Embedded Windows XP. Der Hersteller ist ausgerechnet derjenige, der auch die umstrittenen US-Wahlmaschinen herstellt: Den Diebold-Wahlmaschinen wiesen Wissenschaftler schwere Sicherheitslücken nach; um interne Diebold-Dokumente gibt es mittlerweile einen heftigen Rechtsstreit.

The Nachi worm compromised Windows-based automated teller machines at two financial institutions last August, according to ATM-maker Diebold, in the first confirmed case of malicious code penetrating cash machines.

Adobe stellt die Weiterentwicklung von LiveMotion ein
Wie Adobe klammheimlich auf der LiveMotion-Webseite bekannt gab, wurde die Entwicklung sowie der Verkauf der Animations-Software für Web-Grafiken eingestellt. Bis zum 31. März 2004 will Adobe noch Support für die Software anbieten.

master/slave drives are politically incorrect
OVER AT Reason there's a report that Los Angeles, because of its politically correct stance, has sent a letter out to its contractors deeming which and which not terms they use.
It prints a letter purporting to be from an official which rules that manufacturers labelling equipment using the terms Master/Slave is not acceptable identification.

Hackers Compromise Debian Linux Project Servers
IDC analyst Dan Kusnetzky told LinuxInsider said the Debian hack was a disappointment, but added that it proved the Debian project's security checks and balances, as well as the ability to respond quickly to vulnerabilities, are all working properly.

AMDAthlon 64 Performance Computing – The heat is on!
Performance… need we say anything else to an enthusiast. We all want it but unfortunately 90% or more of us cannot afford it. What a performance PC may be one week, won’t be next week. In the ever growing world of PC hardware, you just can’t afford to constantly have the fastest PC. Though, we must say that if it wasn’t for all this hardware being released, this website wouldn’t exist, and I would be playing Frogger on my XT again – No! Not Radeon XT but the beloved 086 11MHz (with the turbo button on) XT.

They're then duly parroted in the media. Some enjoy a measure of validity. Most can be filed under "say it often enough and they'll think it's true."
