Heritrix

Heritrix is the Internet Archive's open-source, extensible, web-scale, archival-quality web crawler project.

Heritrix (sometimes spelled heretrix , or misspelled or missaid as heratrix / heritix / heretix / heratix ) is an archaic word for inheritess . Since our crawler seeks to collect the digital artifacts of our culture for the benefit of future researchers and generations, this name seemed apt.

The iLife package, including GarageBand, iTunes, iDVD, iPhoto and iMovie will cost $49, or will be free with new Macs, Jobs said. The company will no longer provide free downloads of iPhoto or iMovie, a strategy it seriously considered last year and that could anger some customers.

iPod-killer ?
Microsoft has plans to take on ... Apple?

Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs was asked during a November meeting with analysts whether the company would ever make its iPod music player work directly with something other than its iTunes Music Store.

There was a noticeable sense of accomplishment in his voice when he answered. First he pointed out the dominant market position achieved by the iPod. Then he noted that the iTunes store had just captured more than 80 percent of the market for legally downloaded music.

Mozbot news

Mozbot 2.4 is out! Things to look for since the last release:

  • The KookBot module ("Think about the tyranny, malignant and unjust, and how it compares with truthful rational approach.").
  • An XML Logging Module (see the sample output).
  • A Conversion module (for converting hex to decimal, Fahrenheit to Centigrade, and so on).
  • A Magic Eight Ball module.
  • Mozbot now checks to see if it really joined a channel instead of blindly assuming it has.
  • Added friendliness in the Infobot and Greeting modules.

Better search results than Google?

As wonderful as Internet search engines are, they have a pretty big flaw. They often deliver too much information, and a lot of it isn't quite what we're looking for. Who really bothers to read the dozens of pages of results that Google generates?
