Wallon virus wrecks Windows Media Player
A new mass-mailing virus called Wallon, which destroys Windows media player and is activated when a user tries to play MP3 or video files from an infected PC, was discovered in Europe on Tuesday.

Nachts tappt so mancher im Dunkeln. Tippt er allerdings auch im Dunkeln, so tappt das Gegenüber im Chat wiederum im Dunkeln, was denn bitte mit "Sz nxgar nuxg fwuk" gemeint ist, wenn die Finger nicht mehr die richtigen Tasten treffen. Nun gibt es Abhilfe!

Ordinary punters in California are entitled to a voucher after Microsoft settled a class action suit in the state. But lawyers who successfully pursued the case want a little more - $258m plus expenses.

InfoVis - Data Visualization Tools
This page provides pointers to commonly used data analysis and visualization algorithms. An XML Toolkit was implemented to facilitate the efficient visualization of diverse data sets as well as easy comparison of visualizations generated by different algorithms. The toolkit provides a unified architecture in which algorithms can be easily incorporated. Many software packages are available in Java and hence can be run on any platform that supports Java 1.4.

The reason for this shameless U-turn is the news that the robotic prof has been giving forth at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's 2004 training conference.

MS patch day: nothing critical ????
The Microsoft patch train rolled back into security central last night with a mercifully light load. In contrast to last month when we had four patches addressing 20 vulnerabilities - including the flaw infamously exploited by the Sasser worm - this month around we have just a single, solitary new patch.

Microsoft: SP2 Will Not Install on Pirated Copies of XP
Contrary to the remarks it made to the ComputerTimes, Microsoft now claims that it will not permit users who have obtained Windows XP illegally to upgrade to its latest service release. Instead, the software giant will continue to enforce compliance with its licensing.
In a nutshell, Microsoft group product manager Barry Goffe told ComputerTimes that Windows XP Service Pack 2 would not exclude pirated copies from upgrading, and that it was more important to keep user safe than to be "concerned about the revenue issue."

Professor faces three years for file sharing
33-year-old assistant professor at the University of Tokyo, creator of file sharing software and advocate of it's use, Isamu Kaneko, was arrested Monday on copyright-related charges.
The charge is developing and offering software that lets people swap movies and video games anonymously.
For violating copyright laws Kaneko risk up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 3 million yen ($27,000).

FBI hielt Computerspielhelden für mutmaßlichen Terroristen
Aufgrund eines anonymen Tipps jagte das FBI einen mutmaßlichen Terroristen. Letzten Endes stellte sich heraus, dass der 'Terrorist' der Held eines Computerspiels ist.
Gewarnt wurde vor dem 'bösartigen Millionär Don Emilio Fulci'. Dieser sollte Anschläge auf London geplant haben. Sogar FBI-Direktor Robert Mueller wurde von dem Fall in Kenntnis gesetzt.
Bei anschließenden Ermittlungen fand ein Angestellter vom FBI über die Internet-Suchmaschine Google heraus, dass es sich bei 'Don Emilio Fulci' um den Helden des PlayStation Spiels 'Headhunter' handelt.

Each year, the Hall of Fame Committee selects new members to the Hall of Fame from a final slate selected by the membership of the Computer Museum of America. Museum members vote from a list of nominees submitted by themselves, industry leaders and the general public.

Sicherheitsloch im Sasser-Wurm
Auf dem Sicherheitsportal k-otik wurde ein Exploit veröffentlicht, mit dem sich auf Rechnern, die vom Wurm Sasser befallen sind, beliebiger Code ausführen lässt. Die Autoren des Exploits haben einen Buffer Overflow im Sasser-Wurm gefunden; durch Überschreiben des SEH-Pointers (Structured Exception Handler) erhält der Angreifer eine Administrator-Shell auf Sasser-infizierten Windows-PCs. Zwar verfügt der Sasser-Wurm über eine Hintertür, doch diese lässt sich nur für begrenzten Lese-Zugriff verwenden. Durch Ausnutzen des Buffer Overflows kann quasi jeder die komplette Kontrolle über die Rechner übernehmen.
