The return of the dotcom yuppie?
Budding entrepreneurs are increasingly keen to start up online businesses, suggesting that the dotcom downturn is over, new research has found. A survey of MBA students by Palo Alto Software found that 74 per cent were planning to set up a business after graduation, with six in ten of those wanting to start up on the Internet.
According to the research, young entrepreneurs appear to have learnt the lessons of the dotcom boom and bust, with three quarters claiming that their top priority would be "planning ahead for opportunities and challenges rather than following mad hype".

DOOM 3 early?
Is it possible that DOOM 3 could be out today ?
Many GameStop stores in the Southern California area have confirmed that they should be getting their shipments of DOOM 3 on July 31, at least three days ahead of the scheduled Aug. 3 ship date announced by id and Activision (and four days ahead of GameStop original Aug. 4 date). This is based on the new dates showing up in their computers. A few readers on the East Coast of the United States also confirmed the GameStop dates at their local stores.

Lan-Party: Polizei beschlagnahmt PCs
Im Rahmen der Netzwerkparty 'Guns'n Bits' des gleichnamigen Clans wurden am Samstag in der Nähe von Aachen etliche Rechner von der Polizei beschlagnahmt. Grund für diese Aktion waren Hinweise auf Verstöße gegen das Urheberrecht.
Offenbar erregten die Organisatoren der LAN-Party mit Slogans wie '500 GB FTP-Server' das Aufsehen der Behörden. Außerdem habe ein verdeckter Ermittler bereits bei einer vorherigen Veranstaltung desselben Clans verdächtige Aktivitäten bemerkt.

Angst vor Service Pack 2
Mit dem Service Pack 2 will Microsoft Windows XP sicherer machen. Ein größeres Update hat es bei Microsoft noch nicht gegeben. Etwa drei Prozent aller Programme von unterschiedlichen Unternehmen werden aber nach dem SP2 nicht mehr laufen.

Firexplorer
The project is to produce a version of Firefox which looks almost exactly like Microsoft Internet Explorer (including theme, application name, icons etc.), but is based on Firefox’s more secure codebase.

Accused Software Pirate May Be Extradited
An Australian man accused of running a global software piracy network is one step closer to being extradited to the United States. U.S. authorities describe Griffiths as the ringleader of an Internet group, "DrinkOrDie," which authorities say had illegally copied and distributed more than $50 million worth of pirated software, movies, games and music before investigators shut it down in 2001.

A First Look at Doom 3
Sometime in 1993 I noticed a dramatic decline in my personal productivity. Also affected were my sleeping habits and personal hygiene. Same thing happened in 1996. It may or may not be a coincidence that 1993 was the year id Software released a video game called Doom, and 1996 was the year they put out Quake. Maybe there's a connection, maybe not. But I have a feeling it's going to happen all over again in about three weeks when id releases Doom 3.

PHP 5.0.0 Released!
The PHP team is proud to announce the final release of PHP 5!
Some of the key features of PHP 5 include:
- The Zend Engine II with a new object model and dozens of new features.
- XML support has been completely redone in PHP 5, all extensions are now focused around the excellent libxml2 library (www.xmlsoft.org).
- A new SimpleXML extension for easily accessing and manipulating XML as PHP objects. It can also interface with the DOM extension and vice-versa.

Worm sleeps to avoid detection
The latest mass-mailing worm, Atak, hides by going to sleep when it suspects that antivirus software is trying to detect it.
Atak was first discovered Monday. Although antivirus companies do not expect it to cause much damage, they say it will be a nuisance because it can generate a large amount of spam.
