Microsoft pays dear for insults through ignorance
nsensitive computer programmers with little knowledge of geography have cost the giant Microsoft company hundreds of millions of dollars in lost business and led hapless company employees to be arrested by offended governments.
The problem has damaged the company's reputation and the "trust rating," which is seen as key to keeping the company competitive, has dropped, a senior Microsoft executive revealed yesterday at the International Geographers Conference in Glasgow.

Nightmare on Web Street
New Spyware Uses Virus Tricks to Make Removal Difficult
Online security experts say there is a new type of sneaky software floating around in cyberspace. And like its namesake, Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street horror movie franchise, it's an online threat that just won't die.
The new scourge of the online world is a particularly nasty form of spyware — programs that are secretively downloaded when a Web surfer visits a particular site. Once installed on the unsuspecting user's computer, the program will gather information on users as they surf the Net.

A new nanotechnology that eliminates network bottlenecks could help create a web surfers' paradise that is 100 times faster than today's internet.

200 apps clash with XP SP2
Consumers will be offered a major upgrade of Windows XP after Microsoft releases Service Pack 2 through Windows Update later this week.
The 272MB enterprise version of SP2 was released earlier this month and a smaller consumer version - weighing in at around 80MB - was due to be released via Windows Update yesterday (16 August), the BBC reports. This automatic delivery has now been put back until tomorrow (18 August). SP2 was due to debut last year so a couple of extra days wait is hardly going to make much difference.
