Lexmark: Rückruf wegen Elektroschock-Gefahr
Der Druckerhersteller Lexmark hat eine Rückrufaktion der Druckermodelle E232, E232t, E330, E332, E332n und E332tn gestartet. Bei internen Langzeittests wurde entdeckt, dass Nutzer dieser Modelle im unwahrscheinlichen Fall eines mehrfachen Komponentenversagens einen Elektroschock erleiden könnten.

China Threatens Internet Porn Merchants with Life
China has intensified its battle against Internet and mobile phone pornography by threatening distributors with life in prison, Xinhua news agency said.
"Depending on the seriousness of the cases, the sentences range from living under compulsory surveillance, detainment, taking into custody by the police, to various terms of imprisonment and life imprisonment," Xinhua said.

The Sunbird Project
The Sunbird Project is a redesign of the Mozilla Calendar component. Our goal is to produce a cross platform standalone calendar application based on Mozilla's XUL user interface language. At the moment the "Sunbird" name is a project name. It is not official and may change in the future.
Our intended user is someone who uses Mozilla Firefox (or another browser) as his browser, Mozilla Thunderbird (or another mail client) as his mail client and wants a calendar application based on Mozilla.

World's Largest Working Computing Grid
This week, UK particle physicists will demonstrate the world's largest, working computing Grid. With over 6,000 computers at 78 sites internationally, the Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (LCG) is the first permanent, worldwide Grid for doing real science. The UK is a major part of LCG, providing more than 1,000 computers in 12 sites. At the 2004 UK e-Science All Hands Meeting in Nottingham, particle physicists representing a collaboration of 20 UK institutions will explain to biologists, chemists and computer scientists how they reached this milestone.

Scientists set new Internet2 speed record
Scientist have set another Internet2 speed record in their quest to prepare for the 15 petabytes of data Cern will produce yearly. Quick access to this data is important if scientist are to do anything with it.
The team, which included folks from AMD, Cisco, Microsoft Research, Newsys, and S2io, transferred 859 gigabytes of data in less than 17 minutes. It did so at a rate of 6.63 gigabits per second between the CERN facility in Geneva, Switzerland, and Caltech in Pasadena, Calif., a distance of more than 15,766 kilometers, or approximately 9,800 miles.

Microsofts Sicherheitschef surft mit Firefox
Stephen Toulouse, Sicherheitschef bei Microsoft, offenbarte in einem Interview mit dem US-Onlinemagazin Wired interessante Dinge. Der Interviewer sagte zu ihm, dass viele Anwender alternative Browser wie Firefox und Opera bevorzugen, weil sie sicherer sind.

FBI busts alleged DDoS Mafia
A Massachusetts businessman allegedly paid members of the computer underground to launch organized, crippling distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against three of his competitors, in what federal officials are calling the first criminal case to arise from a DDoS-for-hire scheme.

New worm hijacks Webcams
The Rbot-GR virus uses traditional malware methods of exploiting security vulnerabilities in Microsoft operating systems and installs a Trojan horse on the infected computer. In addition, the worm will also take control of Webcams and microphones to spy on users. The virus then sends images and wave files back to hackers, ccording to a report by Sophos, an anti-virus firm.

Der gemeine Raubkopierer gelangt nun auch ins Visier der Mentalitätsforschung. Vorsicht! PC-Freaks sind besonders gefährlich
Mentalitätszuschreibungen, also das Verhalten infolge besonderer Arten des Denkens und Fühlens, waren bislang vor allem innerhalb von volkstümlichen Klischees anzutreffen: Der Franzose ist liebestoll, der Italiener ein Muttersöhnchen, der Schwabe sparsam, und die Finnen sind unterkühlt. Die Richtigkeit dieser Behauptungen außer Acht lassend, gebar das digitale Zeitalter ein weiteres Völkchen, mit dem sich seit geraumer Zeit vor allem die Produzenten medialer Inhalte immer ernsthafter auseinandersetzen: die Raubkopierer.
