IBM liebäugelt mit Open Hardware
Open Source ist ein Erfolgsmodell. Jetzt macht sich IBM daran, es von der Software auf die Hardware zu übertragen. Das könnte tatsächlich funktionieren.

'Superhacker' faces extradition
A British man wanted in the United States for allegedly carrying out "the biggest military computer hack of all time" has been granted bail.
Gary McKinnon, 39, of north London faces extradition over claims he gained illegal access and made alterations to 53 U.S. military and NASA computers over a 12-month period from 2001 to 2002.

In Zukunft soll auch die Nahrungsaufnahme digital unterhaltsam werden. Das Essen wird per Touch-Screen bestellt, danach ein Spiel gegen den Sitznachbarn und zum Dessert ein Klingelton für das Handy.

PC in Öl eingelegt
Ein baden-württembergischer Abiturient hat das Hitzeproblem moderner PCs auf radikale Weise gelöst: Er versenkte den Computer komplett in Speiseöl. Nur die Festplatte blieb "im Trockenen". Ein Jahr läuft der Rechner nun schon wie ein geölter Blitz - ganz ohne Geräusche.

Power outage mars start of annual games show
Some participants at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) lost electricity on Wednesday just as the gaming industry's biggest trade show got underway.
The power went out to mainly the media and administratiVE facilities, but was available on the show floor where various games publishers, developers and hardware makers had set up their booths, said Carolyn Rauch, vice president of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).

Wenn man seinen Windows-Taschenrechner so ansieht, könnte man meinen, seit Borlands "Sidekick" (1984) hätte sich auf dem Sektor der netten kleinen PC-Helferlein nicht viel getan. Weit gefehlt: Mit "Widgets" sieht der Desktop ruckzuck aus wie eine Kirmesbude.

Intel bezahlt 10.000 Dollar für eine "Electronics"-Ausgabe
Gordon Moores Prognose zum Entwicklungstempo von Computerchips hat sich als wahre Weissagung erwiesen. Doch die Ausgabe der "Electronics", die den Aufsatz enthielt, warf man damals achtlos weg. Ein Brite fand die Originalausgabe aus den sechziger Jahren in seinem Keller - und verkaufte sie dem Chiphersteller für 10.000 Dollar.

Schrauber stehen auf Holz und Rost
Das Aufmotzen grauer Computergehäuse zu bunt leuchtenden Kisten ist ein sehr spezielles Hobby. Beim 4. Deutschen Casemod-Wettbewerb trafen sich die begabten Schrauber, um ihre Meister zu küren. Der diesjährige Trend: perfekt gearbeitete Holzgehäuse und Rost-Look.

500,000 PSPs sold in first two days; $150 million in first week sales
Following several days of analyst predictions, Sony today announced that more than 500,000 PSP Value Packs were sold in the first two days the device was available last month. The company also said that the first week sales of the PSP generated more than $150 million at North American retailers.

Internet To Get a 1000 Percent Speed Boost
The speed with which data moves around the Internet could jump more than 1,000 percent with the approval by a Colorado group of a new cable standard.
The industry's standard-settings unit, CableLabs, plans to endorse this month technology that will let operators boost speeds from 400 percent to 1,600 percent over existing lines, USA Today said Wednesday.
