Single spinning nuclei in diamond offer a stable quantum computing building block

Surmounting several distinct hurdles to quantum computing, physicists at Harvard University have found that individual carbon-13 atoms in a diamond lattice can be manipulated with extraordinary precision to create stable quantum mechanical memory and a small quantum processor, also known as a quantum register, operating at room temperature. The finding brings the futuristic technology of quantum information systems into the realm of solid-state materials under ordinary conditions.

Germany declares hacking tools 'verboten'

Updates to Germany's computer crime laws banning so-called "hacking tools" have been criticised as ill-considered and counterproductive.

The revamp to the German criminal code is designed to tighten definitions, making denial of service attacks and attempts to sniff data on third-party wireless networks, for example, clearly criminal. Attacks would be punishable by a fine and up to 10 years imprisonment.

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates: Historic discussion live from D 2007 [Video]

We kind of never thought we'd see the day where Mac and PC voluntarily shared the stage on neutral ground, but that day is today. Very soon Bill Gates and Steve Jobs -- both pioneering execs that need absolutely no introduction -- will sit up in front of the audience here at D and discuss god knows what. Don't miss this, people, who knows if this will happen again in any of our lifetimes. You'll know when we get started. Who's got odds that they don't walk out and say "Hi, I'm a PC." "Hi, I'm a Mac."?

Microsoft will not sue over Linux patents

Microsoft has said it has no immediate plans to sue after alleging patent infringements by open-source vendors.

In an official statement emailed to ZDNet UK, Microsoft confirmed that it would not litigate for now. Advertisement

"If we wanted to go down that road we could have done that three years ago," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "Rather than litigate, Microsoft has spent the last three years building an intellectual property bridge that works for all parties--including open source--and the customer response has been tremendously positive. Our focus is on continuing to build bridges."

Giving up on Microsoft?

There is a huge gulf between Microsoft and Unix developers. I somehow missed walking down the Microsoft road, since I'd started on the Apple II (BASIC, 6502 assembly, Pascal) and never had an IBM PC way back. Then when I got to school it was Tops-20 and VAX/VMS and a little bit of Unix here and there. And by the time I got a PC, it wasn't to run Windows, but rather SCO XENIX on my 286.

How my lack of understanding of how processes exit on Windows XP forced a security patch to be recalled

Last year, a Windows security update got a lot of flack for causing some machines to hang, and it was my fault. (This makes messing up a demo at the Financial Analysts Meeting look like small potatoes.)

The security fix addressed a category of attacks wherein people could construct shortcut files or other items which specified a CLSID that was never intended to be used as a shell extension. As we saw earlier, lots of people mess up IUnknown::QueryInterface, and if you pass the CLSID of one of these buggy implementations, Explorer would dutifully create it and try to use it, and then bad things would happen. The object might crash or hang or even corrupt memory and keep running (sort of).
