Researcher's Analysis of al Qaeda Images Reveals Surprises

Neal Krawetz, a researcher and computer security consultant, gave an interesting presentation today at the BlackHat security conference in Las Vegas about analyzing digital photographs and video images for alterations and enhancements.

Using a program he wrote (and provided on the conference CD-ROM) Krawetz could print out the quantization tables in a JPEG file (that indicate how the image was compressed) and determine the last tool that created the image -- that is, the make and model of the camera if the image is original or the version of Photoshop that was used to alter and re-save the image.

Use of web archive was not hacking, says US court

The use of web archive The Wayback Machine did not constitute hacking in the case of a law firm which used the web archive to see pages which owners did not want it to see, a US court has ruled.

The deliberate bypassing or evasion of the archive's protection measures could still be deemed hacking, though, said Judge Robert Kelly, the judge in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In this case, protection mechanisms put in place by the page owners had failed.

Harley Davidson V2 Engine Case Mod

Case mod may be a bit of an understatement here—this monstrosity is really a case fabrication project, done almost entirely from scratch. A huge fan of Harley Davidson motorcycles, a computer geek with a knack for shaping acrylic decided to build a 1:1 scale Harley Davidson V2 engine.

'Nasa hacker' McKinnon wins right to Lords hearing

Gary McKinnon, the ex-systems administrator accused of conducting the biggest military hack of all time, has won the right to have his case against extradition to the US heard by the House of Lords.

The decision gives McKinnon and legal team a fresh chance to challenge the extradition, having argued previously that the US authorities acted in an "oppressive" manner to secure his removal from the UK.

Microsoft Doesn’t Care About Destroying Linux

Everywhere I turn these days, I continue to hear how “Novell” sold Linux users down the river. And while I partially agree with this perspective, I do differ with those who say Xandros did the same thing. Xandros is simply looking to make sure that fluidity between the Linux desktop and Windows desktop is as smooth as possible. Heck, they did not even share which of these alleged patents were being violated whatsoever to the Linux company. Unfortunately, another company has made a deal with Microsoft, and it is not who you might expect either.

A glitch in the Matrix, or a hungry exploit?

Sûnnet Beskerming researchers observed an interesting deviation in global network traffic over the last 24 hours, particularly for South American, Asian, and Australian networks. Normally, global Internet traffic (as observed by the Internet Traffic Report) oscillates around nine per cent packet loss, with global response times of 138 ms, and the internally derived traffic index at around 79.

Sustained over the last 24 hours, the traffic index has dipped almost five per cent, packet loss has climbed to 11 per cent, and the global response time to almost 150 ms.

Check them out, you can either scroll-down for relevant category, i.e office software, email tools, messengers, games, etc. or get a ‘all-in-one’ package (all essential tools) . While there are more apps for windows users, I tried to include a mac version for each essential tool. All free. Enjoy!
