Microsoft will auf Mini-Notebooks
Um Windows auch den Nutzern in Schwellenländern schmackhaft zu machen, möchte Microsoft sein Betriebssystem Windows XP nun auch auf den XO der OLPC-Initiative portieren. Außerdem wird Microsoft Anfang 2008 Richtlinien für den Einsatz von XP auf Mobilgeräten veröffentlichen.

French high court thumps Google Video
A French high court has added some extra spice to the legal debate over online video sharing.
In mid-October, the High Court of the First Instance of Paris issued a ruling against Google Video after it was sued by a Paris-based film company called Zadig Productions. Naturally, Zadig was peeved that Google was hosting one of its films, and the court slapped the web giant for copyright infringement.

A 21-minute videotape showing Hans Reiser's missing wife playing and cuddling with their children at her son's birthday party captivated jurors at the Linux programmer's murder trial here Wednesday.
The glowing facial expressions of the 12 jurors and four alternates as they watched a sixth-year birthday party for one of the Reiser's children was one of the lighter yet more powerful moments in the murder trial of Hans Reiser, who is accused of killing his wife to end a bitter divorce and acrimonious custody battle.

BBC Slams Own Report On Dangers of Wi-Fi
A Panorama programme claiming that Wi-Fi creates three times as much radiation as mobile phone masts was 'misleading', an official BBC complaints ruling has found. The team involved in the research came under fire from the school where the 'investigations' were held for scaremongering, but now the BBC has come out with an official ruling.

Teenager arrested over '£9.7m computer hacking ring'
Police in New Zealand have questioned a teenager believed to be the ringleader of an international cyber-crime group.
The network is alleged to have infiltrated over one million computers and skimmed millions of dollars from people's bank accounts.
The teenager, who is 18, cannot be named for legal reasons but his cyber identification was "Akill".

Hacker Uses Sony PlayStation 3 to Crack Passwords
Nick Breese, a senior security consultant at Auckland-based Security-assessment.com, has come up with a way to drastically increase the processing capability of cracking passwords, using a PS3.
By implementing common ciphers and hash functions using vector computing, Breese has pushed the current upper limit of 10--15 million cycles per second -- in Intel-based architecture -- up to 1.4 billion cycles per second.

Microsoft Must Pay $140 Million For Using Multiple Passwords To Activate Its Software
Another day, another problematic patent ruling. Microsoft now needs to pay $140 million for violating a patent on using two or more passwords to protect against unauthorized use of a piece of software. Yes, someone actually got a patent on that idea.

The worst-case scenario used to be that online ads are pesky, memory-draining distractions. But a new batch of banner ads is much more sinister: They hijack personal computers and bully users until they agree to buy antivirus software. And the ads do their dirty work even if you don't click on them.The malware-spiked ads have been spotted on various legitimate websites, ranging from the British magazine The Economist to baseball's MLB.com to the Canada.com news portal.
