HOWTO Encourage Women in Linux
This article explains some of the difficulties and biases women face in the Linux community and examines various strategies for addressing those difficulties in order to encourage more participation by women. At the 2002 Ottawa Linux Symposium, I hosted a LinuxChix Birds Of a Feather session. During the BOF and throughout the conference, I heard the same set of questions: "My girlfriend hates Windows, how can I encourage her to use Linux?" "Almost no women attend my local LUG. How can I fix this?" "Why aren't there more women in open source?"

Your Boss Is Watching
Instant messaging -– a tool many perceive as off-limits to the prying eyes of employers –- may soon be going the way of e-mail. In the interests of record-keeping and tighter security, industry analysts say a growing number of companies that allow instant messaging in the office are also monitoring its usage.

Build your own supercomputer
Hi there. This is a bit of documentation on how to put together a very low cost and extremely compact beowulf cluster. We needed a beast like that for one of our internal pet research projects, so we decided to see how cheap and how compact we could make the thing. The total material bill came to $US 4150, for that you get a 10 node 600 MHz PIII 128 MB ram per node cluster. (Prices April 2000). They all boot of their own floppy disk. Each machine is hooked up to the net using a 100 Mbit ethernet card.

Microsoft memo questions anti-Linux efforts
Microsoft believes many of its efforts to market its products against Linux and open source are backfiring, according to a memo posted on the Internet.
Particularly ineffective tactics include legal arguments and name-calling, the memo says. Top Microsoft executives have said open source is a "cancer." The company says it needs to instead focus marketing on total cost of ownership.

MS admits its Linux-bashing jihad is a failure
The Beast has hired a research crew to do a bit of attitude sampling among the Great Unwashed in the US and abroad, and has found that slagging Linux is not winning it any points. In a company memo posted by Eric S. Raymond here we learn that regular folks are both eager for a Microsoft alternative and generally respectful of the open-source concept.
