Sicherheitskonzept: Windows-PC verrammeln und verriegeln
Ein Antiviren-Programm schützt nicht vor Sicherheitslücken in Web-Browsern, eine Personal Firewall nicht vor 0190-Dialern und ein Dialer-Schutzprogramm nicht vor Viren. Wer seinen PC wirksam vor unerwünschten Internetverbindungen und Zugriffen schützen will, braucht ein stimmiges Gesamtkonzept, das ständig auf dem aktuellen Stand gehalten wird.

Die Modelle der aktuellen PowerMac-G4-Modellreihe fallen nicht nur durch ihre verspiegelten Laufwerksklappen (von Apple "mirrored drive doors" genannt) und die an Auspuffrohre hubraumstarker Amischlitten erinnernde Öffnungen auf. Nach dem Einschalten hinterlassen sie auch durch einen ohrenbetäubenden Lärm einen bleibenden Eindruck.

Microsoft gibt DirectX 9 frei
Microsoft hat die endgültige Fassung von DirectX 9 bereits auf seinen Servern liegen. Infos dazu findet man zwar auf Microsofts Download-Seiten noch nicht; doch auf den Servern steht bereits ein Websetup bereit, das die benötigten Dateien automatisch lädt und installiert. Eine Deinstallationsroutine hat Microsoft nicht vorgesehen.

Im populären Medien-Player Winamp sind Sicherheitslecks aufgetaucht, die das Handling von ID3v2-Tags bei MP3-Dateien betreffen. Sowohl in Version 2.81 als auch die Ausgabe 3.0 des Players können Buffer Overflows bei bestimmten Tags auftreten, die Angreifer zum Ausführen von Code mit den Rechten des Anwenders, der am lokalen Rechner angemeldet ist, nutzen können.

Sony settles with Nintendo
"Console Talk has the story on a settlement between Sony and Nintendo over the rights to the "PlayStation" name, which was originally a joint owned copywrite, given to a CD and Cartridge based system to play SNES games. The settlement is for 10% of Sony's proceeds, past and present on the "PlayStation" name, currently amounting to approximately $2.3 billion. Nintendo is allowing Sony to pay it off in installments over the next 20 years.

Pentagon sieht WLAN als Bedrohung
Die Militärs glauben, dass durch die zunehmende Verwendung von WLAN bis zu zehn Radartypen für die Luftraumüberwachung und die Steuerung von Raketen gestört werden könnten. Die US-Regierung will daher eine internationale Begrenzung des Frequenzspektrums im 5-GHz-Bereich für WLAN durchsetzen.
