Dell to remove floppies on desktops
Floppy disk drives will soon be history at Dell Computer Corp.
The company plans to stop installing the drives on high-end Dimension computers in March and offer them only as an option, Dell spokesman Lionel Menchaca said.
For years, computer users stored data on portable floppy disks. The plastic square disks can hold up to 1.44-megabytes of information.
But Round Rock, Texas-based Dell has seen customers moving toward newer, larger capacity technology - especially portable hard drives and rewriteable CDs.

Virus triggers suit against Microsoft
A Korean civic group plans to file a lawsuit against Microsoft Corp. over the computer worm attack that crippled the nation's Internet activity last month.
The People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD) blamed the Microsoft SQL servers' vulnerability to the worm, called "slammer," for the shutdown of Internet networks here Jan. 25. It claimed that Microsoft should have done more to protect its customers from a threat it was conscious of. "We plan to collect plaintiffs beginning next week for a class-action suit against Microsoft," said Bae Shin-jung of the PSPD.

Plug computer into clothing
IT is almost beyond the realms of imagination - a computer powered by being plugged into an item of clothing. Scientists attending a three-day conference at Wollongong University focusing on the latest breakthroughs in intelligent polymers, believe such a development is only a matter of time. "The materials to do this are now available," the university's Professor Gordon Wallace said today. "It is now just a case of merging the materials with the textile engineering, it's totally feasible." Prof Wallace said the US military and navy were particularly interested in "fibre batteries".

NASA Reportedly Hacked Hours After Columbia Was Lost
A hacker group attacked and struck down servers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory just hours after the Columbia space shuttle was lost, according to a London-based security company.
The attack, allegedly pulled off by a group calling itself the Trippin Smurfs, temporarily staggered nine servers running on the Sun Solaris operating system, according to a report issued by mi2g, a security firm based in England. The attack was fired off as a protest against the U.S.'s position on Iraq.

Opera 7: Patch gegen Sicherheitslücken
Der norwegische Browser-Hersteller Opera hat auf seinem FTP-Server die Version 7.01 seines Windows-Browsers bereitgestellt, offenbar als Reaktion auf die von Greymagic bekannt gemachten Sicherheitslücken. In ersten Versuchen ließen sich die Exploits mit Version 7.01 nicht mehr nachvollziehen, auch der Test im c't-Browsercheck zeigt keine Verwundbarkeit des Browsers mehr an.

P2P-Tauschbörse SoulSeek vorerst vom Netz
Seit einigen Tagen ist die Musik-Tauschbörse SoulSeek nicht mehr erreichbar. Programmierer Nir Arbel bestätigte jetzt die aufkeimende Befürchtung, dass es sich nicht nur um einen Serverausfall handelt, sondern dass die Musikindustrie dahintersteckt. Laut einem Statement des Programmierers im Forum des deutschen SoulSeek-Portals zwang ihn eine einstweilige Verfügung der Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) dazu, den Index-Server herunterzufahren und die Website vom Netz zu nehmen. SoulSeek setzt, ebenso wie zuvor Napster und Audiogalaxy, auf einer zentralen Netzstruktur auf -- ohne Index-Server ist die Tauschbörse nicht mehr existent.

The Slammer worm that recently crippled the internet was the fastest spreading computer bug in history, say security experts.
An analysis of the attack has shown that the worm took just 10 minutes to spread across the world.

Hasst sie Schultüten? Sind ihr Kinderstühle zu klein, sitzt sie nicht gern im Schulbus? Ingeborg Thuen ist anders als die anderen Kinder. Jetzt forderte ihre Gemeinde sie auf, ab Februar die erste Schulklasse zu besuchen. Aber die 106 Jahre alte Norwegerin will nicht recht - und weiß dafür einen einleuchtenden Grund.

Knoppix 3.1 kommt weit herum
SUCHTGEFAHR
An sich gilt die "PC-Welt" ja nicht als Hort oder Hüter der GNU/Linux-Plattform, die aktuelle Nummer drei des reichweitenstarken deutschen PC-Magazins könnte der Open Source Gemeinde allerdings neue Fans zubringen.
Das erst kürzlich zum Download frei gegeben "Knoppix 3.1" liegt bei, eine komplette Linuxdistribution auf CD. Mit dieser bootet man einen Windows-PC und hat ein Linux-Betriebssystem, ohne es zu installieren. Möglich wird dies durch ein gutes Kompressionsverfahren und automatische Hardware-Erkennung.
P.s wer sich die Pc-welt aus prinzip nicht kaufen will in der nächsten ct soll knoppix auch mit dabei sein
