US Army attacked via new Windows flaw
In an unusual case, attackers have begun exploiting a new Microsoft bug before the flaw was widely known. Microsoft is urging sites to patch their servers as quickly as possible
Microsoft warned customers on Monday that a security hole in Windows 2000 and the company's Web server software is allowing online attackers to take control of corporate servers.
Because the vulnerability is being actively exploited by Internet vandals, Microsoft advised customers to apply a patch or use a workaround to defend against the attack as soon as possible. One of the servers attacked belonged to the US Army, according to reports.

Computer virus writers mostly obsessed males
Male. Obsessed with computers. Lacking a girlfriend. Aged 14 to 34. Capable of sowing chaos worldwide.
That is the profile of the average computer-virus writer, an anti-virus expert said on Tuesday.
About 1,000 viruses are created every month by virus writers increasingly intent on targeting new operating systems, said Jan Hruska, the chief executive of British-based Sophos, the world's fourth-largest anti-virus solutions provider. "So far, we've seen no indication of decreased interest in virus writing," Hruska told Reuters in an interview.

Alcohol-powered laptops ahead
Toshiba has unveiled a prototype fuel cell it hopes will become the power source for laptops in the future. The fuel cell breaks down methanol to generate power and, Toshiba claims, will provide enough juice to run a laptop for about five hours.
To get the cell working, the alcohol fuel is provided in small 50cc cartridges.
Toshiba hopes to put the fuel cell on sale in early 2004.

Doom 3 and half-naked fairies
The Holy Grail in the battle for dominance of the graphics world has always been cinematic-quality performance. If you can get a game that's as graphically complex as "Shrek" or "Toy Story" to run smoothly on a PC, the theory goes, you'll open up the gaming industry to a vastly larger audience.
For years, nVidia and ATI have claimed to hit that milestone every time they have a new chip coming out – though that has generally been more PR bluster than fact. They're making the boast again about their latest releases. And while the skepticism is still thick, even critics are acknowledging that the gap between in-game and on-screen graphics is quickly shrinking.
