Do albums matter as much as singles anymore? We like to think so. But 2006 was a great year for indie acts representing with a hot track. We wanted to figure a way to celebrate the year in music with you guys, and thank y'all for being a part of the Stereogum family. (Aww, emo hugs all around.) Yes, Christmas traditions pass from generation to generation. But 2006 finds Santa visiting some very naughty children playing with YouTube, digital editing software, and a wicked imagination. They’re dreaming of a Christmas that’s web 2.0 — with networked audiences re-interpreting all the classic holiday specials. Or maybe they’re just returning the holiday to its pagan roots.

Xmas mashups from djBC and friends - Santastic & Santastic II
djBC sez, "A kick-ass group of mixers and mashers from the US, England, France, The Netherlands and Sweden has contributed to the second Santastic collection of 23 bizarre and wicked cool X-mashups and remixes. We've even got 2.5 Chanukah bootlegs this year for the all nice little Jewish kids, plus "liner notes" and sample lists from the producers. The Hitmaker vs. The Beatles
A remixer called The Hitmaker has mashed up The Beatles' Sgt. Peppers album, and is releasing the tracks online one at a time. The first one is "Getting Better," and it sounds great. No word on the schedule for the upcoming tracks yet.

Mash-Up Masters: Celebrating A Half-Decade Of "Genie-Us"
As you might have noticed, we've been a little mash-up crazy at the Idolator flophouse, a psychosis probably brought on by taking in massive amounts of new music at once.
It's been about five years since the DJ known as the Freelance Hellraiser mixed the Strokes' "Hard to Explain" with Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle," and the result--aptly titled "A Stroke of Genie-Us"--ushered in a new era of slapping together songs.
