The Year In Mash-Ups

Do albums matter as much as singles anymore? We like to think so. But 2006 was a great year for indie acts representing with a hot track. We wanted to figure a way to celebrate the year in music with you guys, and thank y'all for being a part of the Stereogum family. (Aww, emo hugs all around.) Everybody argues, everybody laughs, but you're here 'cause you love music! Or you Googled "lindsay lohan crotch"?

In 2006 mash-ups saw a decline in mainstream acceptance as casual listeners lost interest and media outlets which once bolstered the musical niche regressed to their initial state of disinterest. But beneath the increasing skepticism a strong base of bootleggers kept creating music which still found a fan base with their ever-present originality.

Christmas Mixes - DJ Riko Merry Mixmas

This year's edition includes a special treat -- an exclusive new track by Amillionsons. Their "Super Sharp Santa" is the best drum-and-bass Christmas song you'll ever hear and also features what just might be the best use of sleigh bells ever. Christmas 2.0: Subverting the Holidays With Re-dubbing

10 Zen Monkeys , has a collection of holiday mash-up clips that run the gamut from sublime to surreal.

Yes, Christmas traditions pass from generation to generation. But 2006 finds Santa visiting some very naughty children playing with YouTube, digital editing software, and a wicked imagination. They’re dreaming of a Christmas that’s web 2.0 — with networked audiences re-interpreting all the classic holiday specials. Or maybe they’re just returning the holiday to its pagan roots.

Mash-Up Masters: Celebrating A Half-Decade Of "Genie-Us"

As you might have noticed, we've been a little mash-up crazy at the Idolator flophouse, a psychosis probably brought on by taking in massive amounts of new music at once.

It's been about five years since the DJ known as the Freelance Hellraiser mixed the Strokes' "Hard to Explain" with Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle," and the result--aptly titled "A Stroke of Genie-Us"--ushered in a new era of slapping together songs.
