Jail cells made from modern art

A Spanish art historian has found evidence that suggests some Civil War jail cells were built like 3-D modern art paintings in order to torture prisoners.

The cells were built in 1938 for the republican forces fighting General Franco's Fascist Nationalist army, who eventually won power, historian Jose Milicua told the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Satellite Photos Depict 'Earth As Art'

They look like the work of abstract artists, but the images reflect reality — the rhythmic shapes of mountains, deserts, clouds, fjords, scattered cities and towns turned into brilliant patches of red, green and blue — flashed to earth from a satellite 440 miles in space.

Sculptures out of match heads

I made my first matchhead in 1982. Kinskihead was a response to a reviewer comparing one of my magazine installations to a weekend modeller making a ship or the Eiffel Tower out of matches. The reviewer talked about matches as if their rightful place was at the bottom of the materials league. I was puzzled by this and immediately attracted to this underdog.

Happy b-day
God Bless You, Mr. Vonnegut

The Writer on His Eightieth Birthday

It was perhaps no mere coincidence in the grand scheme of the universe that the birthday of the great writer Kurt Vonnegut falls on Veterans' Day.

Vonnegut, who becomes an octogenarian Monday, lived through the firebombing of Dresden, Germany, as an American prisoner of war in 1945. This seminal event became not only the basis of his classic novel Slaughterhouse-Five, but became the theme of his extensive anti-war writings.

An all-time-high
Pirelli Calendars

Derek Forsyth had the idea in 1963. The PR-boss of the tyre-manufacturer Pirelli convinced his boss to stop giving away just the usual christmas gifts. No more keyrings, no more pocket knives. Instead - a calendar, with photos of gorgeous women, scantily dressed. Something special, unique. The Pirelli-Calendar was born - and Edition No. 1 was a total flop.
