Art forgery operation broken up by FBI and Spanish police
Spanish police and the FBI have dismantled a multimillion-dollar international art forgery ring which duped hundreds of customers into buying counterfeit prints of works purporting to be by artists including Picasso, Warhol and Dalí.
Two Italians, one Spaniard and four Americans were charged in connection with two overlapping conspiracies believed to have netted about $5m (£2.5m). With the help of US gallery owners, fraudsters based in Catalonia and Italy used eBay to sell the fakes to victims in the US, Canada, Australia, Europe and Japan, US and Spanish law enforcement officials said. The bogus works were sold for between €1,500 (£1,180) and €20,000 to more than 1,000 clients.

Writer Arthur C. Clarke Dies at 90
Arthur C. Clarke, the award-winning sci-fi writer and futurist most famous for his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, died Wednesday in Sri Lanka. He was 90.
His writing, both fiction and nonfiction, established Clarke as a visionary during the last half of the 20th century. In a paper titled "Extra-Terrestrial Relays: Can Rocket Stations Give Worldwide Radio Coverage?" published in 1945, Clarke floated the idea of using geosynchronous satellites for communications long before such technology changed our world.

ASCII Code Curtain Branches Into Home Decor
The mere idea of ASCII code immediately makes my brain hurt. As much as I may try to play like I've got some geek suave going on, I know that inside my synapses are misfiring and things are well on their way to short circuiting in the left hemisphere of my cranial cavity.

Color Chart: Reinventing Color from 1950 to Today
This exhibition takes as its point of departure the commercial color chart, an item that openly declares the status of color as mass-produced and standardized. Midway through the twentieth century, long-held convictions regarding the spiritual or emotional power of particular colors gave way to the embrace of color as an ordinary commodity. At the same time, many artists rejected traditional artistic pedagogy about correct relationships and instead adopted aesthetic approaches that relied on chance, ready-made sources, or arbitrary systems...This exhibition features the work of forty-four artists who take a position in which art and life mingle rather than remain separate, and where beauty is found in the everyday rather than in the ideal.

MIT Student Gets Artistic With LED Art
An MIT graduate student has up a page showcasing a standout art project. He's designed custom LED light fixtures which are seven times brighter than the closest similar commercial models, and include colors which can't be reproduced by a normal RGB cluster (including two ridiculously bright UV LEDs). The result: some beautiful mixed media artwork.

Frida Kahlo's Studio
I made this miniature dollhouse for my daughter because I wanted her to learn about Frida Kahlo. This was such a fun project to make. It took me months to complete it but I am glad that I did it. Natalie loves it and once in a while we play with it on the kitchen table. She likes anything that is tiny just like her Mom. Next year I want to finish another dollhouse for her that I started last year but this one is bigger.

Czech artists may face jail over hoax nuclear blast on TV
The performance, entitled “Media Reality” sparked controversy throughout the country. The Czech National Gallery awarded the group with the newly created NG 333 prize for their work. ”This piece---alongside all of the art the group Ztohoven is making - is crossing the border from art into something more social. The artists are trying to escape from the cage of art, and into real life. They would like to influence their own lives, and other people’s lives.” The cash prize totaled approximately 333,000 KOR, or US$18,350.
