Elephant saved by lack of 'evidence'

A ROGUE elephant, blamed for the deaths of more than 20 people and sentenced to be put down, won a reprieve today as proof of its guilt was insufficient, an Indian wildlife official said.

Villagers in the hills near Jameshedpur town, 120km from Ranchi, the capital of the eastern state of Jharkhand, said the elephant had trampled to death at least 20 people in the past five months.
