Vietnam tries to grow taller kids

The Vietnamese government is worried by studies that show its population is not growing taller as fast as the populations of countries like China and Japan. So the state-run Physical Training and Sports Institute has proposed a solution.

Its $40-million program would set up diet and exercise standards at public schools to bolster children's height and weight. The goal is to add 3 centimeters to the height of kids by 2010.

General Vo Nguyen Giap, the country's greatest living figure for his victories over France and the U.S., stands just 5 feet tall. The average Vietnamese male is 5.5 ft. (1.65 m.); the average female is 1.53 meters tall.
