Goldfish a threat in the wild

An illegal gang of goldfish is hanging out in the old farm pond on the University of Maine at Augusta campus.

"I haven't got a clue how they got in. I'd say there's probably more than a couple of hundred in there," said Peter St. Michael, director of the school's buildings and grounds.

The small man-made pond —roughly 50-feet by 50-feet — is also home to hornpout, golden shiners and large-mouthed bass. The latter species was introduced in July by the state Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
