City artist's £1 painting auctioned for £75,000

AN elderly woman who spent £1 on a painting by an Edinburgh artist at a household clearance sale because it would look "nice" in her kitchen has sold it for £75,250.

The owner, in her 60s, had no idea the painting hanging over her kitchen sink for the past 40 years was a work by Scottish Colourist Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell.

She had bought it in the 1960s when a neighbour in Co Wicklow, Ireland, died. She said she liked to look at it while she washed up.
