Eurobrief: To stem Europe's populist tide


Ever since Jorg Haider's Freedom Party burst on to the Austrian political scene in the late 1990s, Europe's chattering classes have spent many a conference hour debating how to stem the rise of far-right populist parties across the continent.

Hardliners such as Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel, believe in treating extremists -- the Freedom Party, the Vlaams Blok in Belgium, the Liga Nord in Italy and company -- like political lepers.
