Conservatives emerge strongest in Austrian election
Despite crushing losses for rightist Joerg Haider's party, it stands a good chance of renewing its government coalition with the conservatives who enjoyed a sound victory in the latest elections.
Preliminary results released by the interior ministry showed the conservative People's Party of Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel surging nearly 16 percentage points to tally over 42 percent in Sunday's elections.
