Defeated far Right could cling to power in Austria
JÖRG Haider’s far-right Freedom Party suffered a humiliating electoral defeat in Austria yesterday, but looked like it could still cling to power in a new coalition government. With almost half the votes counted, the Freedom Party was heading for just 10.4 per cent of the vote - down almost 17 per cent from its record results in 1999.
