Haider's Freedom Party suffers severe losses in Austrian election

Voters catapulted the conservatives into first place in general elections Sunday but pounded rightist Joerg Haider's Freedom Party, stripping the conservatives' government partner of nearly two-thirds of its previous support. Preliminary results released by the Interior Ministry showed the conservative People's Party of Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel surging nearly 16 percentage points to gain more than 42%. That left it the strongest party for the first time in 36 years.
