Remembering the Tiananmen Square Protest and Massacre

On the night of June 4, 20 years ago this week, seven weeks of student pro-democracy demonstrations against the Communist government of China came to a violent end in Tiananmen Square. Magnum Photos was there covering the uprisings, and its photographers witnessed the scene of the lone protester—“Tank Man”—who stood bravely in front of the military tanks making their way into the square, which led to the iconic image taken by Stuart Franklin. The world watched as the military crushed the student demonstrations.
