The 100 Best Tracks of 2008


Welcome to Pitchfork's best of 2008. We're going to count down our favorite 100 tracks of the year, 50 today and 50 tomorrow; the top albums come later this week. As we did in years past, we've extended the candidate pool beyond the confines of singledom-- basically any song released or covered in 2008, whether a single or not, was fair game for this list. Some songs that made a huge impact this year-- M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" being most notable-- were released in 2007 and weren't eligible (we had a "Paper Planes" remix at #4 last year). As you read through our thoughts on the songs, you can legally download, stream, or watch videos of nearly all of them. The streams originate from Lala.com, and most are available for one free play every 24 hours for those in North America (a number can also be replayed indefinitely from anywhere). Ready?
