A History of Hallucinogens

A promising new documentary airing on the History Channel this month, Peyote To LSD: A Psychedelic Odyssey, explores the colorful history of hallucinogenic drugs. The film is hosted by noted anthropologist Wade Davis, author of The Serpent & The Rainbow. Dr. Andrew Weil, LSD inventor Albert Hoffman, and the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir are all featured in the film. Davis traces the life and adventures of Richard Evans Schultes, an acclaimed botanist who travelled the world in search of ayuhuasca, peyote, and other ritualistic psychedelics. Davis follows in Schultes' footsteps, seeking the same experiences, and examining the different cultural attitudes towards the perceived helpful or harmful effects of powerful hallucinogens.
