Manu Chao repeats himself well on 'La Radiolina'
Simply said, singer-songwriter Manu Chao is an enigma. He is considered one of the founders of Latin alternative music, but he sings in French, Spanish, Arabic, Galician, Portuguese, English and the Senegalian language Wolof. He is thought of as a standard bearer of the anti-globalization movement, but he shies away from leadership, living his life more as a nomadic anarchist.
Chao's new album, "La Radiolina" (Nacional), will more than please his fans, although his penchant for repetition and recycling remains unabated. The title, invoking a pirate radio station for the world's politically voiceless, is not unlike his previous coining of Radio Bemba, slang for the "word on the street." Still the 21-track album is perhaps his most creative work yet, sharpening his political focus while allowing him to explore new sonic styles.
