Haider to Lead Freedom Party Again
The success of the Haider-led Freedom Party in 1999 elections generated anxiety abroad due to anti-foreigner and anti-European comments made by party officials and to Haider's remarks in support of Adolf Hitler's employment policy. The European Union briefly slapped sanctions on Austria in 2000 to protest that party's role in the government.
