Government collapses COUNTRY BRIEFING FROM THE ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT

Austria's ruling coalition has collapsed after leading Freedom Party (FPO) ministers stepped down from the government when it became clear that they no longer had the support of their party. The vice-chancellor and FPO leader, Susanne Riess-Passer, the finance minister, Karl-Heinz Grasser, and the party's parliamentary speaker, Peter Westenthaler, resigned from their posts on September 8th, following a policy dispute with party members who were backed by the former FPO leader, Jorg Haider.
