Rasbpian: Insecure and not trusted!
Not only is Raspbian intentionally without any way to verify integrity of download (hashes not signed), employee of Raspberry PI own admission states basically states they fear using secure crypto out of fear of being "uncompliant" with some "crypto export laws".
I work for Raspberry Pi. As for using SHA-256 over SHA-1, that then pushes the hash into the realm of crypto software which is controlled by export regulations - given the minuscule chance of collisions with SHA-1, it would cause far more problems than it solves to use SHA-256.

The LSD cult that transformed America
The Brotherhood of Eternal Love emerged from the hippie culture of ‘60s California – but their ambitions were global. Benjamin Ramm looks at the books and ideas that shaped the group.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the great cultural moments of the last century, the ‘Summer of Love’. It will be commemorated as a season of celebration, but it was triggered by a protest event: the Human Be-In at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco in January 1967, organised in opposition to the prohibition of LSD. State and federal governments argued that the psychedelic drug, also known as acid, threatened the fabric of US life, and they were right – LSD made neither good consumers nor loyal citizens in a time of war. Their adversary was a group of lawless evangelists who had formed a church in devotion to the drug’s transformative power: the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.

Thanks, Obama: NSA to stream raw intelligence into FBI, DEA and pals
A last-minute rule change signed off by the outgoing Obama administration has made it much easier for the NSA to share raw surveillance data with more than a dozen government agencies. The changes [PDF] are tacked onto executive order 12333, which was enacted by then-President Ronald Reagan to allow intelligence agencies to share information on non-US nationals. The new rules will allow the NSA to share unfiltered signals intelligence with other members of the intelligence community if it is deemed necessary.

Here are 10 'fake news' stories Trump has pushed as real
President-elect Donald Trump is not a fan of “fake news.” But you'd be excused for thinking he is. The soon-to-be president in his first press conference of 2017 on Wednesday admonished the media for reporting on a widely disputed and still unconfirmed memo that alleges Russia held compromising information on Trump. “It's all fake news. It's phony stuff. It didn't happen. And it was gotten by opponents of ours, as you know, because you reported it and so did many of the other people,” Trump said. “It was a group of opponents that got together—sick people—and they put that crap together.”

Trump's New Cyber-Security Advisor Runs a Very, Very Insecure Website
Yesterday, President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani as his cyber security advisor concerning the US private sector. The news made headlines, mostly because Rudy Giuliani is the last person who someone would think to be qualified to handle "the cyber," and because nobody seemed to know what Giuliani's security firm actually does. The infosec community didn't take the news lightly, hoping to see someone with more expertise in that position. It also didn't took long for cyber-security experts around the world to find flaws in the website of Giuliani's security firm.

Michael Moore Dubs Trump the 'Godfather' of Fake News, Urges Publishers Not to Back Down
"He himself was hiring investigators to support his fake news. He is the godfather of this decade's fake news."
Filmmaker Michael Moore appeared on MSNBC late Thursday to reflect on President-elect Trump's ongoing feud with the press. After calling CNN "fake news" and BuzzFeed "a failing pile of garbage," Moore called Trump's press conference performance "masterful." "As a director, it was a masterful performance, he owned the room he owned the day, this should be very distressing to everyone," Moore said.

derstandard.at Why did a Russian propaganda network take over C-SPAN's feed?

Scientists Extract Fingerprints from Photos Taken From up to Three Meters Away
Researchers from Japan's National Institute of Informatics (NII) announced yesterday they have successfully extracted usable fingerprints from photos of exposed fingers taken up to three meters away. The news is troublesome as biometrics authentification is becoming more and more prevalent, with fingerprints being a favorite method of securing applications and physical resources. Speaking to Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun, Isao Echizen, researcher for NII's Digital Content and Media Sciences Research Division said that modern phone cameras are powerful enough to capture sufficient fingerprint details if users expose their fingers to the camera.
