Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin, psychedelic pioneer, RIP
Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin, maverick chemist, psychedelic pioneer, and inspiring human being, died yesterday at 88 years old. Sasha is best known for popularizing MDMA (Ecstasy) and introducing it to the psychological community, and synthesizing hundreds of new psychoactive chemicals that he first tested on himself. His scientific research is detailed in a huge output of papers and books including the seminal tomes TIHKAL and PIHKAL, co-authored with his wife and research partner Ann Shulgin.

Pixar to give away 'Toy Story' 3D RenderMan software
The 3D rendering software behind films such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc and Harry Potter is to be given away free for non-commercial use.
RenderMan, which is developed by Pixar, has faced increased competition from rival animation rendering programmes such as VRay and Arnold.
Although Pixar, which is owned by Disney, produces its own films, it licenses RenderMan to rival studios.
The company has also cut the price of its software for commercial use.

Das Zellgift schädigt aber auch das Gehirn, kann aggressiv und paranoid machen - und eine medikamentöse Behandlungsmethode für Suchtkranke gibt es nicht. In Oberösterreich ist die Droge nun auf dem Vormarsch, erzählt Kurosch Yazdi, Leiter des Zentrums für Suchtmedizin an der Landesnervenklinik Wagner-Jauregg in Linz.

Polizeibeamter betrieb illegale Hanf-Plantage
Eine Zivilstreife nahm in Braunschweig einen Polizeibeamten mit 40 Gramm Marihuana fest. Der Beschuldigte ist Mitglied eines Mobilen Einsatz-Kommandos.
.... Die weitere Überprüfung ergab schließlich, dass der Polizeibeamte im Keller seines Wohnhauses in Gifhorn eine Hanf-Plantage in größerem Stile betreibt. Daraus wird Marihuana hergestellt. Mehr als 60 Pflanzen, Rauschgift und die technische Ausstattung dieses Drogen-Kellers wurden sichergestellt.

BP asks Justice Antonin Scalia for right to avoid making payments for 2010 Gulf spill
BP Plc on Wednesday asked Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia to allow the company to avoid making payments to businesses demanding compensation for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill while litigation continues.
The company acted after the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted an injunction earlier in the day that had prevented payments being made. Last week, the court had decided not to revisit a decision rejecting BP’s bid to block payments to businesses that could not trace their economic losses to the disaster.

Lego tower in Hungary breaks world record - video
Hungary has managed to set a new world record by building the highest Lego tower on Sunday afternoon (May 25) in front of Saint Stephen's Basilica in Budapest.
Construction of the 36-metre Lego tower began on Wednesday with several school children taking part helped by official Danish Lego constructors. The aim was to break the current US record of 34.43 meters.
