Fake popup study sadly confirms most users are idiots

For most of us, security issues happen to "other people"—we block popup ads, we carefully examine dialog boxes and, for those of us on the Mac platform, we snicker when confronted with something that attempts to mimic a Windows system warning. But everyone knows that they are exceptional—what's the behavior of a more typical user like? Some researchers have tested how college students respond to fake dialog boxes in browser popup windows and found that the students are so anxious to get the dialog out of the way, they click right through obvious warning signs.

Homeland Security Department Testing "Pre-Crime" Detector

New Scientist reports that the Department of Homeland Security recently tested something called Future Attribute Screening Technologies (FAST) — a battery of sensors that determine whether someone is a security threat from a distance. Sensors look at facial expressions, body heat and can measure pulse and breathing rate from a distance. In trials using 140 volunteers those told to act suspicious were detected with 'about 78% accuracy on mal-intent detection, and 80% on deception,' says a DHS spokesman.

Video: Solar Sunrise, the Best FBI-Produced Hacker Flick Ever

With Ehud "The Analyzer" Tenenbaum back in legal hot water, what better time to revisit the 1998 Pentagon computer intrusions that made Tenenbaum famous? So I descended into the Threat Level media vault and retrieved this aging VHS copy of Solar Sunrise: Dawn of a New Threat, an 18-minute FBI training video that dramatizes the first -- though not the last -- recreational hacker attack to send the U.S. government into a tizzy.

NASA Uses 90 Rubber Ducks to Study Global Warming

NASA scientists have dropped 90 yellow rubber ducks into holes in Greenland's Jakobshavn glacier in an attempt to understand why glaciers speed up during summer months as they slip into the sea. The ducks, attached to a football-sized probe, have an email address and message prompting anyone who discovers the ducks to contact NASA to reveal where and when the duck was found. There is an undisclosed award for anyone who finds one of these rubber global warming crusaders. The NASA scientists, based at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California, hope this campaign will shed new light on the melting mechanisms behind Greenland's fastest moving glacier…
