Revealed: desperate final hours of the world's biggest ever financial fraud
Bernard Madoff, one of Wall Street's most respected financiers, apparently planned to carve up his last $300m (£200m) between friends, family and employees before making the shocking confession that his investment prowess was really the result of one of the world's biggest ever frauds.
But, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the 70-year-old could not implement his plan before his huge pyramid scheme - whose 10-12% annual returns had attracted top-flight investors around the globe - collapsed with losses of at least $50bn

The 100 Best Tracks of 2008
Welcome to Pitchfork's best of 2008. We're going to count down our favorite 100 tracks of the year, 50 today and 50 tomorrow; the top albums come later this week. As we did in years past, we've extended the candidate pool beyond the confines of singledom-- basically any song released or covered in 2008, whether a single or not, was fair game for this list. Some songs that made a huge impact this year-- M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" being most notable-- were released in 2007 and weren't eligible (we had a "Paper Planes" remix at #4 last year). As you read through our thoughts on the songs, you can legally download, stream, or watch videos of nearly all of them. The streams originate from Lala.com, and most are available for one free play every 24 hours for those in North America (a number can also be replayed indefinitely from anywhere). Ready? Here we go...

Hack of the Clones: Why Apple Can't Stop the Copies
Just hours after announcing plans to sell a high-end Mac clone, niche electronics reseller EFIX USA changed course in order to avoid a nasty legal confrontation with Apple.
"We certainly don't want to get into a legal battle that's over a couple thousand dollars," an EFIX USA spokesman said. "Potentially Apple could have a legal issue there. They may not have a legal issue, but with all the money they have they might try to make one."

FBI taps cell phone mic as eavesdropping tool
The FBI appears to have begun using a novel form of electronic surveillance in criminal investigations: remotely activating a mobile phone's microphone and using it to eavesdrop on nearby conversations.
The technique is called a "roving bug," and was approved by top U.S. Department of Justice officials for use against members of a New York organized crime family who were wary of conventional surveillance techniques such as tailing a suspect or wiretapping him.

R.I.P. Bettie Page
Bettie Page was a Southern girl alone in the big city, who worked as a typist by day and took drama classes in the evening, hoping to overcome her accent to find work as an actress. She just did what she had to do -- and what she liked to do -- to pay the rent. She was always comfortable in her own skin, preferring to be naked at home, so it was easy to pose for some pictures for her boyfriend, an amateur photographer. It was he who suggested she alter her haircut, letting her bangs cover most of her forehead. It became the look she was famous for, along with that fetching smile. She eventually posed for numerous discreet cheesecake shots wearing bikinis or not, and she made most of the swimsuits herself, as she thought the department store styles of the time were not sexy enough.
