If there were any doubt that Google is in a prime position to establish a legal monopoly in the world of digital books, the US patent office has snuffed it out.

Earlier this year, as spotted by The New Scientist and churned up late last week by National Public Radio, Google patented a book-scanning technology that can digitize the world's texts without subjecting them to the cruel treatment of a flatbed scanner.

Irvin 'Zabo' Koszewski dies at 84

The longtime Santa Monica resident was a regular presence at Muscle Beach, where in his prime he'd pump out 500 Roman Chair sit-ups in about 15 minutes.

In the sport of bodybuilding where competitions include judging on various parts of the body, Irvin "Zabo" Koszewski had a singular distinction. Not that the rest of him wasn't finely sculptured and impressive, but judges generally would come back to his midsection, and his impressive set of abs.

This power plant is situated near Smolensk city. Its power generation potential is 3 Megawatt and it was build for 8 years, from 1982 to 1990. Angela Merkel in her underwear stops traffic

Berliners on the city's main shopping drag, the "Ku'damm", were greeted Thursday with an unusual sight: a giant mocked-up image of Chancellor Angela Merkel in a matching purple bra and knicker set.

The 100-metre-square (1,000-square-foot) image of the half-naked world leader is part of a nationwide advertising campaign for an underwear company aiming to cash in on the success of a "cash-for-clunkers" scheme for old cars.
