Hitler-Saluting Gnome Sparks Outrage
Great art or bad taste? A "Nazi" garden gnome in Nuremberg has prompted a public investigation and a renewed debate on what constitutes art.
The humble garden gnome is usually associated with quaint tradition rather than progressive art. Nonetheless, a gallery owner in the German city of Nuremberg has caused controversy by displaying in his window a golden gnome making the Nazi salute.

An Indian state government has admitted that its tiger reserve has none of the animals left.

The Meaning of Life
What’s life for? That question stirred as I contemplated two rhesus monkeys, Canto, aged 27, and Owen, aged 29, whose photographs appeared last week in The New York Times.
The monkeys are part of a protracted experiment in aging being conducted by a University of Wisconsin team. Canto gets a restricted diet with 30 percent fewer calories than usual while Owen gets to eat whatever the heck he pleases.

VISA Card Users Charged $23 Quadrillion
Several people rocking VISA prepaid credit cards got a peculiar $23,148,855,308,184,500 charge this week when using their VISA BUXX cards. That's 23 quadrillion dollars. To put that figure in layman's terms, it's almost double what I'm suing Disney for.

The best things in life aren't free*
That's the take–home message I got from a very interesting piece in last week's (September 5) New Yorker "Talk of the Town" section by Michael Agger.
It's entitled "Car Seat Lady" and profiles Ms. Alisa Baer, a 25–year–old medical student in New York City who is an expert on car seat installation. (She's installed an estimated 5,000 in her career to date.)

Science Fiction Cuisine: Share and Enjoy
It’s been a while since I, your self-appointed geek chef, have bestowed any culinary oddities upon you, dear readers. I do hope you’ve managed to eat something in the meantime. This time, I’ll install a tap in Douglas Adams’ brain and serve up something cool and froody.
To say Douglas Adams was funny is like saying Bruce Lee was pretty good at punching people. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, overflowing with Adam’s innovative approach to space adventure and philosophical absurdity, is among the most beloved works of science fiction and a high water mark in humor writing. One could argue that Bruce Lee was the Douglas Adams of kung fu.
