NASA’s Most Awesomely Weird Mission Patches
Perhaps the best thing about NASA’s military provenance is that the agency picked up the armed services’ habit of making patches.
We’ve long loved the Most Awesomely Bad Military Patches series that our sister blog, Danger Room, runs. Then, earlier this week, space collectors bid up the accidentally limited edition Stephen Colbert treadmill patch to more than $175 on eBay.

Axolotl verges on wild extinction
The amphibian that never grew up is on the verge of going extinct in the wild.
New survey work suggests that fewer than 1,200 Mexican axolotls remain in its last stronghold, the Xochimilco area of central Mexico.
The axolotl is a type of salamander that uniquely spends its whole life in its larval form.

Defaced Nazi-Wahlplakate
Die Verdi-Jugend hat in Sachsen Plakate der NPD defaced. Find’ ich gut. Und ich weiß, dass die Tatsache, dass ich Überkleben von Piratenplakaten durch die CDU scheiße, das Aufhübschen von Nazi-Plakaten aber gut finde, einigermaßen unfair ist. Was mir sehr am Arsch vorbeigeht, denn bei Parteien, speziell bei Nazi-Parteien bin ich sehr, ähm, parteiisch.

Dabei ging es auch um das Jahr 2009, als der Staat anfing, die Freiheit aller Menschen auch im Internet zu schützen. Weißt du was darüber?” Ich lächelte und streckte meinen Arm aus. “Komm mal her”, sagte ich. “Das ist eine Sache, über die heute nicht mehr so häufig geredet wird. Und man soll auch nicht darüber reden. Komm mal runter in den Keller, da zeige ich dir was.” Ich nahm ihn in den Arm und wir stiegen die kalten Kellertreppen hinunter. Hier, zwischen all dem Gerümpel, alten Erinnerungen und Zeitzeugen einer vergangenen Ära, setzten wir uns auf unsere kaputte Couch. “Weißt du,” sagte ich “es gab eine Zeit, als wir das Internet nutzten, ohne das irgendjemand darauf geachtet hat, was wir aufgerufen haben.” “Boah, ehrlich? Ihr konntet alles auf der Welt anschauen?” “Ja, das Internet war etwas, womit wir uns austauschen, informieren und warnen konnten, wenn etwas nicht so lief, wie es sein sollte. Aber das ist nun schon zehn Jahre her.”

US Senate cyber security bill sparks debate, "internet takeover" fears
Well, this little viral number didn't take long to become the stuff of screaming Drudge sirens. So, over at CNET, Declan McCullagh wrote about an update to a cybersecurity bill that first circulated this spring. In his interpretation of the bill (which I haven't read in entirety, full disclosure), Declan says the bill gives the White House new power to unplug private-sector computers from the Internet in the case of national emergency.

New KFC Opens In Palms? Sort of...(Instead of Fried Chicken, They Sell Marijuana)
There has been an abandoned Kentucky Fried Chicken in Palms, slumping sadly these past few months on the corner of Exposition Blvd. and Hughes Ave. What, locals wondered, would replace it? A new burger joint? A Peruvian rotisserie chicken stand? It turns out that the KFC has been replaced by... a KFC. In this instance, though, the KFC stands for "Kind For Cures", and while they do sell things that are edible, you can't buy them, or even ask about them, without a prescription.

UK team breaks steam car record
A team of British engineers has broken the longest-standing world land speed record in California.
The steam car, Inspiration, recorded an average speed of 139.843mph (225.06km/h) at Edwards air base, in the Mojave Desert, smashing the 1906 record.

Ramadan 2009
In Muslim nations and regions around the globe, this is the first week of the holy month of Ramadan, a time for followers to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual activity during the day, breaking their fast each sunset, with traditional meals and sweets. During this time, Muslims are also encouraged to read the entire Quran, to give freely to those in need, and strengthen their ties to God through prayer. The goal of the fast is to teach humility, patience and sacrifice, and to ask forgiveness, practice self-restraint, and pray for guidance in the future.
