Swiss voters back ban on minarets in referendum
Switzerland voted to ban the construction of new minarets on Sunday, a surprise result certain to embarrass the neutral government and which the justice minister said could affect Swiss exports and tourism.

Police consider death by elk in murder case
A former murder investigation has been reviewed by police who now suspect a 63-year-old woman found dead in Småland, southern Sweden, last year was killed by an elk.

* Gothenburg woman injured in surprise elk attack (14 Oct 09)
* Wild boar hunter in strife for elk kill (1 Sep 09)
The woman’s body was found by a lake close to the village of Loftahammar in September 2008.

Elch soll Frau umgebracht haben
Zehn Tage saß ein schwedischer Mann im Gefängnis, nachdem er seine tote Frau gefunden hatte. Die Polizei hielt ihn für den Mörder. Nach eingehenden Untersuchungen hat sie nun einen neuen verdächtigen: einen Elch - möglicherweise einen alkoholisierten.

Swiss vote to ban new minarets too close for comfort
A threatening image dominates Switzerland’s streets in the form of a dark woman dressed in a Muslim niqab veil, looming over a Swiss flag covered with missile-like minarets with a call to vote “yes” in a referendum on Sunday to ban minarets on mosques here. The posters clearly seek to tap into the concerns of the country’s traditionally Christian majority about increased immigration from Muslim countries.

Das Internet ist die bedeutendste Erfindung des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts: eine friedliche Revolution im Geiste der Dezentralisierung, die größte Stimulation, die der Weltgeist je erfahren hat. Die weltweite Vernetzung des Denkens könnte den ersten Schritt auf dem Weg in eine postnationale Weltordnung markieren. Und doch konnte man hierzulande – nach den Invektiven staatlicher Stellen und mächtiger Lobby-Verbände – letzthin den Eindruck gewinnen, es handele sich um einen Tummelplatz von Räubern, Terroristen und Triebtätern. Nicht nur die Netzgemeinde argwöhnt, dass es bei der rhetorischen Degradierung des Internets zum digitalen Bahnhofsviertel darum ging, den staatlichen Zugriff auf das System zu erleichtern.

A JEALOUS mum has been quizzed by cops - for allegedly ripping out her lover's testicles.
Helen Hodge, 34, was accused of mangling Billy Duncan's privates with her bare hands after accusing him of cheating on her.
Traumatised Billy, 49, was rushed to hospital where doctors carried out emergency surgery to save his maimed wedding tackle.

The Occupation of Alcatraz 1969-71
Forty Thanksgivings ago Alcatraz Island was occupied by a number of Native American activists as a protest. The occupation lasted until June of 1971 The best place to learn about it is PBS's website for Alcatraz Is Not an Island, Jim Fortier's documentary about the Alcatraz Occupation. Scientists 'communicate with aliens via crop circles'
But Bulgaria's fame stretches far beyond our own planet, it seems: the country's space research institute claims it is in contact with aliens.
