Oh Look, UK Piracy Statistics Are Based On Nonsense Too
A recent GAO study found claims of piracy's supposedly-devastating impact on the economy (shockingly) usually aren't based on real science -- despite the fact that such claims (which usually originate from the entertainment or software industries) are repeatedly parroted by government officials. The study also found that there were a few instances where file trading could actually be a good thing -- and could actually result in increased product sales.

George Washington owes $300,000 in library fines
New York City's oldest library says one of its ledgers shows that the first U.S. president has racked up 220 years' worth of late fees on two books he borrowed, but never returned.
Adjusted for inflation, that means Washington owes approximately $300,000 (£197,000).

Non-flying circus: John Cleese's £3,300 taxi fare
He's more famous for a sketch about a Norwegian blue parrot than a Norwegian taxi, but John Cleese may have to change his routine. The actor and comedian reportedly took a cab from Oslo to Brussels on Friday costing 30,000 kroner (£3,300) after he was stranded, along with thousands of others, in the Norwegian capital by the volcanic ash plume from Iceland.

Legalization of Marijuana Activist Jack Herer - Aka "The Hemperor" - Dead At 70!
Longtime pro-marijuana and hemp supporter Jack Herer, aka "The Hemperor," died Thursday morning at 70, according to several reports.
Shortly after 11 a.m., the award-winning author of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes," a book that many supporters of marijuana have cited in the fight to legalize cannabis, passed away at his home in Eugene, Oregon.
After speaking at the Portland Hempstalk festival last September, Herer suffered a heart attack and reportedly had a tough row to hoe on his road to recovery due to several other health issues he was dealing with.
