In Rio de Janeiro hatte der Irrtum eines Polizisten tragische Folgen: Weil der Beamte einen mit Bohrmaschine auf seinem Balkon arbeitenden Heimwerker für einen Drogengangster mit Maschinenpistole hielt, gab er einen tödlichen Schuss auf den Mann ab.

restaurant manager in China swallowed a cockroach that was discovered in a customer's dish to destroy evidence.
The incident took place when Huang Xiaogang and friends were having their meal at a restaurant in Caidian of Wuhan province recently.

Als Polizist verkleidet hat ein 40-Jähriger in Wien seiner Freundin im Rotlichtmilieu zu florierendem Geschäft verholfen. Er verjagte die Konkurrenz der Prostituierten und knöpfte Freiern Ordnungsgeld ab. Der Mann wurde nun zu einem Jahr Haft auf Bewährung verurteilt.

Ball lightning is all in the mind, say Austrian physicists
Physicists in Austria say they have solved the conundrum of "ball lightning", mysterious glowing spherical apparitions which baffled boffins have struggled to explain for centuries.
According to Josef Peer and Alexander Kendl of the University of Innsbruck, there is in fact no such thing as ball lightning in reality. Rather, powerful magnetic fields created by ordinary lightning affect the brains of humans nearby so that they see things which aren't there.

Nach den Erkenntnissen der Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) können sich Webdesigner Cookies sparen: Die überwiegende Mehrzahl der Browser ist eindeutig identifizierbar. Die Internet-Bürgerrechtsorganisation stellte stellte im Januar eine Testseite unter https://panopticlick.eff.org ins Netz, die anhand der unterschiedlichsten Kriterien versucht, einen möglichst eindeutigen "Fingerabdruck" des Browsers zu nehmen.
Die Auswertung von 470.000 Datensätzen, die seit der Verfügbarkeit von Panopticlick anfielen, zeigt nun, dass das Erstellen eines Browser-Fingerabdrucks in der Regel auch gelingt: Fast 287.000 Browser ließen sich unterscheiden. 83,6 Prozent der Anfragenden waren eindeutig identifizierbar, nur bei 11,1 Prozent der Testfälle gab es identische Datenprofile von drei oder mehr unterschiedlichen Rechnern. Mit aktivem Flash oder JavaScript sinkt dieser Wert sogar auf ein Prozent. Da alleine mindestens 95 Prozent aller Internetnutzer das Flash-Plug-in installiert haben, dürfte die Identifizierbarkeit bei einem repräsentativen Datenbestand noch weit höher sein als auf der EFF-Testseite.

The Pirate Bay returned to the business of providing its BitTorrent technology to freetards earlier today with a new bandwidth supplier in the unlikely form of the Swedish Pirate Party, after the site was offline for the best part of a day.
The Pirate Party’s Rick Falkvinge said in a statement this lunchtime that his anti-copyright outfit was the new host of TPB’s homepage and search engine.

Die Auszeit dauerte nur einen Tag: Die Filmindustrie hat einen deutschen Provider gezwungen, die Torrent-Suchmaschine The Pirate Bay vom Netz zu nehmen. Jetzt ist die Seite wieder erreichbar - offenbar über einen Provider in der Ukraine.
Die Filmindustrie hat es wieder nicht geschafft: Sie hat zwar eine einstweilige Verfügung gegen den deutschen Provider CB3ROB erwirkt und damit der Torrent-Seite The Pirate Bay die Verbindung gekappt. Das Landgericht Hamburg verbot dem Berliner Provider, die Seite ans Internet anzubinden, soweit darüber bestimmte Filme zugänglich gemacht werden. Genannt werden sechs aktuelle Filme - einer für jedes der in der Motion Picture Alliance (MPA) zusammengeschlossenen großen Hollywood-Studios.

They will attach global positioning system tracking devices to birds and get them to find the corpses of people who have disappeared in remote areas.
Policeman Rainer Herrmann said: "It was a colleague of mine who got the idea from watching a nature programme."
