Bradley Manning, a 23-year-old from Crescent, Oklahoma, enlisted in the U.S. military in 2007 to give something back to his country and, he hoped, the world.
For the past seven months, Army Private First Class Manning has been held in solitary confinement in the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Virginia. 25,000 other Americans are also in prolonged solitary confinement, but the conditions of Manning’s pre-trial detention have been sufficiently brutal for the United Nation’s Special Rapporteur on Torture to announce an investigation.

Algeria shuts down internet and Facebook as protest mounts
Plastic bullets and tear gas were used to try and disperse large crowds in major cities and towns, with 30,000 riot police taking to the streets in Algiers alone.
There were also reports of journalists being targeted by state-sponsored thugs to stop reports of the disturbances being broadcast to the outside world.
But it was the government attack on the internet which was of particular significance to those calling for an end to President Abdelaziz Boutifleka's repressive regime.

For 17 days, tens of thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in Tahrir Square calling for the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, 30 years in power. They had been acting out of passion for their country and dedication for change. They had protested and waited for a response. The response came in an address from Mubarak to the country and his people. Mubarak would not step down. Then almost miraculously, on the eighteenth day of protests, Vice President Omar Suleiman made a very brief statement on state television. Mubarak had stepped down. ORF & Ägypten: Unprofessionell, unanständig und ohne Gespür
Der gestrige Fernsehabend war eine doppelte Enttäuschung. Zum einen erdreistete sich der ägyptische Diktator – das ägyptische Volk ignorierend – seinen schon angekündigten Rücktritt abzusagen (bzw. hinter lächerlichem Geplänkel so zu verstecken, dass er nicht gewertet werden konnte). Zum anderen kam die Berichterstattung des ORF zu den Ereignissen einem journalistischen Fiasko gleich: Nicht nur, dass es dem ORF nicht gelang für die schon seit Stunden angekündigte Rede Mubaraks einen ordentlichen Arabisch-Dolmetscher zu finden, der die ohne Zweifel historische Rede Mubaraks ohne Gestammel würdig zu übersetzen weiß. Nicht nur, dass sich die Moderatorin und ihr Gast bemüßigt fühlten eben diese Rede auch noch ständig zu kommentieren.

ORF-Sondersendung zu Ägypten: Mubarak, dekonstruiert
Die begnadete Persiflage enttarnte Inhaltslosigkeit, indem sie lediglich Phrasen und Überleitungen übersetzte
Ernst Jandl hätte sich gefreut wie ein kleines Kind, hätte er am Donnerstagabend die ORF-Übertragung der Rede Hosni Mubaraks sehen können. Der Übersetzer unterzog die vermeindliche Rücktrittsrede einer umfassenden Sprachdekonsruktion. Pure Konkrete Poesie.

Suleiman: Ein Schattenmann als Mubarak-Treuhänder
Jahrzehntelang wirkte Omar Suleiman eher im Verborgenen. Seine Ernennung zum Vizepräsidenten inmitten der schweren Unruhen in Kairo rückte den bisherigen ägyptischen Geheimdienstchef ins Licht der Öffentlichkeit.

Kairo - Nach 30 Jahren an der Macht ist der ägyptische Präsident Husni Mubarak zurückgetreten. Die Mitteilung aus dem Präsidentenpalast dazu war kurz und knapp: Der Staatschef habe sich nach den Massenprotesten zu diesem Schritt entschieden, erklärte sein Vize Omar Suleiman. Ein Militärrat werde die Amtsgeschäfte übernehmen.
