Auswärtiges Amt wechselt von Linux zu Windows
Es ist noch gar nicht so lange her, da wurden Windows-Nutzer für altbackene Langweiler gehalten. Open Source hingegen war schick und modern - diesem Trend wollte sich auch das Auswärtige Amt (AA) nicht verschließen. 2002 stellte das Ministerium, damals unter der Ägide von Joschka Fischer, seinen Rechnerbetrieb zumindest Teilweise auf offene Software um. Nun die Rolle rückwärts: Wie die "Süddeutsche Zeitung" berichtet, sind die Techniker im Außenministerium dabei, die hauseigenen Computer nach und nach wieder mit Microsoft-Programmen auszustatten.

Guttenberg Copied Work of German Parliament's Research Department
German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg faces fresh accusations of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis. According to a report due to be published in SPIEGEL on Monday, he used the services of the parliament's research department for his dissertation, and didn't mention the author in his footnotes.

Die Publikationen eines EU-Diplomaten, einer Schweizer Journalistin, mehrerer Wissenschaftler - der jetzige Verteidigungsminister zu Guttenberg hat sich für seine Dissertation offenbar querbeet bedient, ohne korrekt zu zitieren. Doch nicht alle der mutmaßlichen Plagiatsopfer sind stinksauer.
Hamburg - Der Diplomat weiß sofort, worum es geht. Natürlich könne er sich an diese Rede erinnern, sagt Günter Burghardt, ehemaliger Botschafter der Europäischen Kommission in den USA, am Telefon. Es war sein Beitrag zu einer Vortragsreihe an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, am 6. Juni 2002. Eine von vielen, vielen Reden, die Burghardt in mehr als 30 Jahren diplomatischer Karriere gehalten hat.

Airport face-scanning robots switched off
Facial recognition scanners at Manchester Airport have been switched off after an incident in which the robot guard let a couple through the gate even though they had swapped passports.
An immigration officer stopped the couple after they got through the barrier.

Hintergründe zum Einbruch bei US-Sicherheitsfirma - HBGary
Ars Technica hat die Hintergründe zu dem Einbruch bei der US-Sicherheitsfirma dokumentiert, die eigentlich Anonymous an den Kragen wollte und stattdessen dann selbst auseinander genommen wurde. Demnach war der Einstiegspunkt ein proprietäres CMS, das speziell für HBGary entworfen wurde. Dieses CMS überprüfte zentrale Eingabeparameter nicht ausreichend, sodass es möglich war, über passende URLs SQL-Kommandos an die Datenbank zu senden. Auf diesem Weg gelang es den Angreifern, an die Hashes der Passwörter der CMS-Nutzer zu gelangen. Die stellten sich als einfache MD5-Hashes heraus, die nicht gesalzen und somit ein leichtes Opfer für eine Angriff mit Rainbow-Tabellen waren.

Anonymous speaks: the inside story of the HBGary hack
It has been an embarrassing week for security firm HBGary and its HBGary Federal offshoot. HBGary Federal CEO Aaron Barr thought he had unmasked the hacker hordes of Anonymous and was preparing to name and shame those responsible for co-ordinating the group's actions, including the denial-of-service attacks that hit MasterCard, Visa, and other perceived enemies of WikiLeaks late last year.
When Barr told one of those he believed to be an Anonymous ringleader about his forthcoming exposé, the Anonymous response was swift and humiliating. HBGary's servers were broken into, its e-mails pillaged and published to the world, its data destroyed, and its website defaced. As an added bonus, a second site owned and operated by Greg Hoglund, owner of HBGary, was taken offline and the user registration database published.

Thanks for all the phone calls, whether you were pissed off at us for playing the art noise from japan at six in the morning, or in ecstasy for playing THAT SONG you'd only heard once...and were dying to hear again! All of you folks out there who kept you radios tuned to 90.3 FM mean a hell of a lot to us, indeed you're the very reason we existed. We gave you hearts and souls for thirty four years... Russia's Fish Fight For Oxygen In St. Petersburg Ponds
Fish cluster at an ice hole, covered with thin pieces of ice, struggling for air in a pond in a park in St. Petersburg, Russia. As the long Russian winter drags on, fish in the ponds of St. Petersburg become increasingly desperate for oxygen, clustering in vast, thrashing masses at shrinking holes in the ice. Not only does ice block oxygen that could be diffused into the water from the air, but it also impedes sunlight from reaching oxygen-generating plants and algae in the water.

Fraunhofer Peers Into The Mobile 3D Market
One of the most quickly expanding markets in the visual industry is the world of 3D television and movies, and German research firm Fraunhofer has found a way to make the third dimension mobile.
Researchers at Fraunhofer have combined the new mobile radio standard LTE-Advanced with a video coding technique. This puts 3-D films on your cell phone. The experts will be presenting their solution from February 14-17 in Hall 2, Stand E41 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
